This is American football, so you Europeans shouldn't get too excited.

Anyway, I was watching the Boise State vs. Nevada game when I started thinking about the BCS system and how odd it is. I know that there has been a big debate about how there should be playoffs or have it just be record based. I was thinking about poor Boise State and how they got stuck in a terrible division so they couldn't go anywhere. They've gone undefeated or had one loss the last four seasons and still not gotten into the championship game. In fact, last year they were the ONLY undefeated team. Should this happen because they play bad teams, or does there need to be a change so that undefeated teams actually get to the championship?

And I'm not just talking about Boise State, I'm talking about the whole system in general. Boise State was just a good example.

EDIT- Of course, Boise State had to lose that game and give me no good example for this year other than TCU.

I do agree that the BCS is a dumb system. Like you said, Boise State has had championship caliber teams for several years now, but haven't played in one. It ticks me off. I am all for a playoff system as it's so much easier, and you don't get crappy bowl games that no one will watch. It should be playoff, because records don't mean much unless you have a REALLY tough schedule.

It's not about going undefeated & not getting the recognition, it's all about the money. The system was setup to ensure profitability for all the college bowls & they actually added even more to the post X-mas schedule. There's definitely a better chance than the way it used to be.
I agree that the system needs an overhaul, but I don't see it ever turning to a play-off system.

BCS = money.. plain and simple.

I wish they would go to a playoff system.. as it would give a REAL NCAA D1 football champion.. but who knows when that will ever happen right?

bcs

The 5 BCS bowl games need to become an 8-team playoff. The other 20something bowl games can remain the way they are.

Now iam a Virginia Tech fan, so iam not to keen on Boise State after beat us in week 1.
But i do agree that they have been screwed by the system, because they play in a weak division, they are seen as a weak team, when their not.
Those of you that follow the NFL will notice the NFC West as a poor division were the divisional leaders are 6-7 and difinatly one of the teams in that division will go to the post season were my 8-5 Bucs could potentially miss out, that said i would enjoy it more if college had roughly the same system just with more teams, that why you would get good teams vs good teams and a deserving overall champion, instead of 3 decent bowls and about 78 pointless bowls.
But i cant see anything ever being done about the current system.

UConn is crap.. the whole system is crap.. just like the Big Ten and their silly Divisional names.

LOL iam indeed a big Buccaneers fan, even though its not a great time to be a bucs fan today after yesterdays awful result lol

First off, Big 10, really? Legends and Leaders? I can see your ego (and stupidity) from here.

Playoff needs to happen. Minimum 16 teams. The TV deals alone would just be astronomical. If 16 team system, the following conferences get auto bids:

Big 12
Big 10 (leaders and losers lol)
SEC
MWC
Pac 12
ACC

Each conference gets auto bid via champion. Those 6 teams have HOME games first game of the playoffs. The remaining two home teams will either come from: A)Big East or B) Any undefeated teams. If there are two undefeated teams, they get the nod over the Big East.

The remaining eight are selected by meeting the criteria below best.

A) Record
B) Ranking
C) Strength of Conference. This would be decided by RECORDS of the teams and the conferences strength of schedules. This would eliminate the SEC from being #1 immediately because, while they do have a strong conference, they play nobody outside. Chattanooga State, Georgia State, UL-Lafeyete etc. This would encourage teams to actually play a decent non conference.

The quarter-finals would be played on New Years Day. Fiesta, Sugar, Rose, and Orange bowls. If the auto teams are still alive, 1-4 get their choice of bowl, Pac 12 Rose etc. This way the bitching stops from the conferences about not being represented in said bowl. Then the championship game continues to rotate between those four sites.

The rest of the teams who don't make the playoffs get bowl games still.

First of all.. The Big Ten stuff came from the Big Ten douchebags.. and their has been an ENORMOUS amount of negative feedback.. some polls registering a 95% hate of the new name and logos. Odds are they will change the names.. as no one on this Earth, including a LOYAL Big Ten fan such as myself, thinking they are ridiculous.

Second.. if a playoff system such as March Madness could be worked out.. except with home games for the first few rounds.. I think it could be adopted.

I heard a major complaint would be 'the longer season means players could get hurt.. ect ect.' Funny.. EVERY other division, including the damn NFL, go through longer seasons that include a playoff.. and low and behold.. no complaining from them.

Haters of a playoff system are delusional.

The system is just too confusing!!!! Also since coaches get to play a good part in determining the schedules, coaches like Joe Paterno (PSU), schedule games against some of the lamest teams just to get a win.

You know most major college football teams do that too right? Of course it varies team to team.. but give me one schedule of a major college football team that DOESN'T have one cupcake in their non-conference schedule.

yeah, thats what I mean, thats why I don't like the system. Plus PSU and PITT would be a great Pennsylvania rivalry, but Paterno would rather play some crap school like Coastal Carolina

Well you can't play the cream of the crop each and every week. I do agree.. some rivalries and things that should be embraced aren't.. but what can you do? It is like that in many levels of sport where you need to do this or that to get to the post season.
