Bavarian beer, creds and culture - Sep 2014

CF Legend
Thursday 11th

The night before Plod and Richard stayed at mine and we left the house at some awful time in the morning (4am?). Richard then drove us to London Gatwick airport where we met up with Nic. We sorted our lives out, had some breakfast and boarded our Easyjet flight to Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. The World's most ridiculous airport which lives on the border of three countries, France, Germany and Switzerland. We go straight to the hire car peeps to find we have an option of two cars, one is far two small for us and one isn't ready yet. Richard goes with the car lady to inspect said car which was a Fiat 500L, he wasn't very happy with the car but we didn't have choice. After some additional car faff we were all sorted and on the road to Europa park.

I say that as if Richard didn't have any issues with the car, but that would be a lie, turns out this car was not made for Richard size so not only was the clutch pedal too close to the side for Richard's foot to use it in an efficient manner but the gear stick was stiff and definitely not Richard-proof. Somehow we did manage to get on to the motorway and some time later arrive at the El Andaluz resort.

I checked us in while Richard went to park the car in the car park. Check in was simple and quick with the staff being able to speak really good English. We were given our park tickets and we made our way round to the park entrance for the hotels.

These weird objects that moved were creepy

Inside the park we decided to head straight for creds and as the closest was Atlantica Supersplash we went for that first. In the area there was a dive show with added ramp for people on skis, it was something I hadn't seen in a dive show so I found it kinda fascinating. The show also went on for ages.

The queueline theming was insane and well executed.

The queue was quite long but moved really quickly due to the crazy efficient staff. The ride was ok, didn't get too wet which was nice.

Next up was Wodan, something I was looking forward to since hearing lots of mixed reviews. The queueline was really long (yet the bit over the water with fire and smoke wasn't open?) and as I'd heard, was epically themed. I have a soft spot for Norse God theming too. Unfortunately some bits of the queue had the house lights on which ruined any atmosphere that was being created by the rest of it. I loved the room full of projection mapped images, was very cool. The station was also pretty awesome, the statue heads turning to face the train was a very nice touch. The fly through didn't create as much of an effect as I thought it would, especially considering some of the others I've seen.

So what did I think of it? It was very fast with the occasional pops of airtime. However it gave me woodieache (headache created by riding a wooden rollercoaster), this is a common problem I have with wooden rollercoasters and it tends to give me a more jaded view of the ride, but I was willing to give it another go during our time at the Resort.

We then decided food was needed (it was probably about 2pm at this point, if not a little later). I grabbed a hot dog which was actually nice and then a nice slice of cake. It was in the beautiful Scandinavian cafe and it was tasty.

We were going to do Blue Fire next but as we had hotel ert the next morning and the park was busy we decided to utilise our time by moving on. Instead of utilising our time we joined a huge queue for the rapids. It did constantly move though, like barely a second was spent standing still. Yay for German efficiency. The ride was pretty good, my jacket did a good job of protecting me from the water and Richard got quite wet.

Walking onwards via the Scandinavian area a loo break was requested, I wandered in the Sunken village attraction with Richard. There was a troll, neither of us understood what was really going on.

We then wander over to Russia for Euromeh. I wasn't a fan of this on my last visit but it had to be done because Nic and Plod needed the cred. Once again it had a very quick moving queue. Then we were finally on the dreaded Euromeh, it began its 5 hour rotating oil drum lift hill and lead us on to an assault course of meh, pain and dullness.

Outside of the ride was this juggler on a unicycle, she must have liked us because she pretty much followed us for the next 5 minutes.

Next up was the Swiss bobsleigh run which has such a lovely themed area. The queue is once again quite well themed, and then it transpired that wasn't the actual queue and the actual queue is an odd cattlepen with some random questions and facts about things.

The ride is actually quite fun but it does build up a silly amount of speed and then hits a brake run. Still it's one of the better ones of this ride type. We then walked through the fab little Swiss village to the other cred, Matterhorn Blitz. It had a crazy long queue. Once again it moved quickly, especially for the ride type. It also had another indoor queue section with some interesting theming.

The weather had turned a little cold and windy while we were in the queue but it wasn't until we were on the ride that the leaves decided to viciously attack us from above throughout the duration of the ride, added a whole new element to the ride though. Talking of which, the ride was fun and smooth even if the layout is unoriginal (apart from the lift which was amazing to watch Nic and Plod's expressions when it happened).

It felt like it was going to really chuck it down (rain, not leaves) so we headed straight fro Eurosat before the rest of the park gained the same idea. I loathe the cattlepen queue for this ride, although it moves quick it also only moves in batches. It's a boring queue but at the end of it is the amazing 80s robot at the top of the escalators.

It was a good thing we joined the queue for this ride when we did as the heavens proper opened. Weirdly enough the golf ball which houses the cred was leaking in lots of areas providing a rather unusual wet ride on an indoor coaster. There are loads of cool lasers inside but I find the ride itself a bit unpleasant at best. Just doesn't do anything for me.

We then moseyed on over to Silver Star only to find Richard and Nic struggled to get the lap bar restraint on the test seat down so we bailed on that plan, instead we head for Pegasus. The Greek area of the park was dead, probably because it was rather damp out and both of these creds are out in the open. We pretty much walked on Pegasus. It has a smattering of decent theming around.

I think it's a fun family coaster and nothing more really. It could do with some more larger ruins to pass through to create some nice head choppers and that. We then went over to Poseidon, not caring for the wetness levels despite the damp weather. We had to pass under a trojan horse.

10665740_10154677040995360_2840994778849816867_n.jpg

The theming for Poseidon is incredible, one of my favourite themed rides, a bit of a shame out in the coaster section but everything else is on such an epic level.

The ride is actually quite good fun, it snaps around the corners a bit and the addition of something rattling around in our boat as we were flying round the track added some amusement. The staff were a little perplexed when Richard handed them the random object. Still don't know what it was, probably the falanje.

We stayed in the Greece area as we walked straight in to the Curse of Kassandra. It feels so cramped inside. I like the soundtrack and I also like that it tries to do something different in the form of bum and back pokers but it is far from being my favourite madhouse attraction.

It was then straight on to Atlantis Adventure, a small indoor shooty ride. I still find it weird how hidden this attraction is, when there isn't a queue for it you could easily miss it. I love the design of the ride though, despite being awful at it.

We then ended up in the football place waiting to do the football dodgems where there is a giant football in there with you. The track was quite small and the cars didn't move too fast. The balls also kept just getting stuck on the side or corners with not a lot of movement going on. Nice idea but in reality it sucks.

1596924_10154677051805360_1653908779530742216_o.jpg

We then walked through the Grimm fairytale area to get to Arthur. I love this area, it's like a smaller, more modern version of Efteling's Forest of Forever. There were lots of interactive things going on too, we explore it more on the second day.

Inside was very well themed, felt like there was lots going on. There was a giant bug animatronic that after you purchased a special coin and cup dispensed a unique drink themed to one in the films. It was awesome and I wanted to see it in action so I purchased one, it was fairly pricey but also very tasty.

After my tasty beverage we joined the long queue (advertised 40 minute wait) for the rollercoaster. After a while of the queue moving we noticed one of the trains stop on one of the helices outside, then trains started to appear with no people on it. Yep, it had broken down. We waited ages before they reopened it (probably not as long as it felt). To speed loading up they have a huge locker system in place (which was actually being updated when we were there). You get given a card and locker number, you go to the locker and it opens up for you, stuff all your belongings in and then close the door. After riding you find yourself at the other side of the lockers where you can open the locker up from. You then hand the card back.

10348385_10154677055650360_7678620171397114273_n.jpg

The queue moves fluently due to it's conveyor like station with a new row always unloading/loading. The station is also fab, I loved the fake animatronic ride op. The ride itself is smooth, fun and occasionally forceful. One of the scenes where it's like a metropolis scene from the films is superb with so much to look at. I actually noticed there was a box which said Mack rides and quite possibly a whole bunch of ride facts on it. I think there is a whole World of potential for this ride system and Mack have really thrown everything at this to show what you can do with it.

We then decide to leave the park to get some food at the hotel and watch the show at the Colloseo hotel. We ended up doing a bit of a tour of the hotel and discovered that it's full of win.

The show started shortly after we arrived, there was a decent sized crowd there to watch it. All the cast are from various shows within the park. There were fountains, fire, fountains on fire(!), acrobatics, dancing, poi, wire work and a woman splashing about in a small bowl of water. I loved it, it did kinda have everything.

After the show we went to collect everything from the Fiat of terror where Richard showed us he had done a bad. So, you know how I said the car wasn't built for a Richard? Well, turns out his eye level when sat in the car is so high he wasn't able to see the bottom of a metallic dangly sign. This resulted in, well, a massive dent in the roof....

Anyway it transpired that we had our room upgraded! So now we had a room which overlooked the park!! I couldn't be happier about this. Our room was huge and was such a nice luxury. I so very rarely stay on site at parks due to the cost but we managed to get a really decent rate and it was just so worth it.

Two shower heads are clearly necessary

And that was the end of our first day. It was exhausting and I'm glad we managed to get so much done on the first day. I like Europa park, it has a great selection of attractions and things to see and do. Thanks for reading and look out for part 2 soon.

Friday 12th

We awoke in our large hotel room and looked out over the park, such a fab view....

10255893_10154681555990360_8584990349458905715_n.jpg

We then had breakfast in the buffet area which had plenty on offer. They also had a few of the park character's roaming so we said hi to two of them...

After filling ourselves up with too much food we then filled the car with all our stuff before heading into the park for the last 15 minutes of the hotel ERT.

Unfortunately the weather was a little dull and the rain throughout the day was on and off. We decide to join the queue for Blue Fire. By the time we were off the park had officially opened (so much for abusing the ERT). The ride was just as fantastic as I remember it being. The inversions are great and are taken at a brilliant pace and the interaction with the large themed rocks is cool.

We then headed straight to Silver Star where there wasn't much of a queue yet. We then waited extra for row Funf so Nic and Richard would definitely get on. The ride was a little rougher than I remember but it was full of nice floater air time.

10407507_10154681556840360_497584034979226434_n.jpg

We then did the dinosaur ride hidden in the Eurosat building. I had no idea what it was and the long (yet void of any other guests) queueline of themed things was exciting. The ride turned out to be an omnimover full of dinosaurs. It actually wasn't that great but there was a lot of effort put into it.

We then headed into the Italy area and do all three of the dark rides in the area. We started with the Gondola themed one which seemed random and had a food theme. The queueline had a random camera and screen where things would appear, Richard got a chef hat...

Yeah I'm not really sure what it was about but there was a room devoted to the theme of a gelato disco and I love gelato so it won points there. The next dark ride was a rip-off of Phantom Manor/Haunted Mansion. It was dated.

They even had the whole duel lift pre-show but it was poor and they were loading both at the same time resulting in a horrible bottleneck of people inbetween the pre-show room and the ride system, it was horrendous. The last of the Italian themed dark rides was Da Vinci themed. It was also a dark ride in the light. In fact it wasn't really that themed apart from the station and the ride cars. It was nice hovering over the dark ride in the light section of the park though.

The next ride was one of the aforementioned dark rides in the light boat rides. This one was themed to fairies apparently but we just saw a World of very bright shrubberies, odd mushrooms and then some fairies inside a cave.

Another nearby dark ride in the light had this animatronic band of animals you could see from off the ride. Sascha Sax was missing something....

10460711_10154681571060360_3657236887825037062_n.jpg

Richard and Plod then explored the kids water play area thing. Nic and I found some random little huts with some animatronic scenes that started up when you enter the building. They were telling some sort of story about a man who travelled?

We then found a path full of fountains, for some reason we decided to go along the path, the fountains would turn on and off, somehow we all got through without getting wet.

We then went into the museum which we spent a lot of time in, lots of very interesting items. I like the models of the rides and hotels...

It was then time for the film show thing. It's amazing, each room pretty much shows off another cool effect that can be used in a dark ride. So the first has the projections on busts, one room has projections onto water and also lasers creating the image of coaster cars and track layouts. I love it, it's very cool and unnecessary.

We then headed into the Dutch area for the pirate boat ride. Obviously a rip-off of Pirates of the Caribbean but with a more Asian theme. I really liked it, there were loads of very cool effects inside, I especially like the boat battle scene and the cannon that shot out real fire!

Also like Disney's PotC it has a restaurant in the end scene. However they went one step further and there's a stage not a scene, at certain times there will be an actual show on the stage that is in the middle of the ride. Another thing I loved was that the entire ceiling was hidden by a star curtain, that's quite an extreme effort that not even Disney bothers with.

1270281_10154681575410360_7593578332944016235_o.jpg

Richard went to speak to the hotel about the car damage, so we decided to ride the mine train cred. I really love the station for this ride and that the train releases a mass of smoke before it goes.

The interaction with the log flume and cave is great, I especially love the FIRE that happens at one point in the cave. After the ride we decided to do the cave walkthrough. It's really cool, once again the interaction between the theming, path, coaster and log flume is great. So many things inside like a dragon and lots of trolls doing things. Then as you progress you start to smell the smells.

The path then leads into a corridor as to where the smells are coming from. It's completely covered in a Gaudi style mosaic, it's ridiculous.

It then leads into a shop selling rocks, it was a shop clearly intended for people like Sue. Probably a good thing she wasn't with us or we'd have never left. Thinking we still had loads of time until Richard met back up with us we went into the Globe theatre to watch a show. It was themed to Abba and had a mix of quality. They sung a lot of the less popular tracks, a lot of weird choreography then a whole bunch of the popular tunes, sometimes they sung well and sometimes it was awful. It was split up with a random janitor magician act. He was absolutely phenomenal, I've never seen a park performer totally own it before. A small kid at one point was acting up, to help the kid calm down he made a balloon animal for her and got the crowd to pass it to her, it was adorable and amazing. He joked and owned the crowd in French, German and a little bit of English. Kudos to that man because he took the show from being meh/ok to amazing.

1052268_10154681585335360_8706499610741843765_o.jpg

We then joined back up with Richard. We decided to chill out a little bit so found the amazingly themed jungle cafe. Plod and I had some non-alcoholic fruit cocktails, they were nice. What we weren't expecting was that the cafe had a fake storm, the windows had fake rain going down them, thunder and animal sound effects and some lighting effects too. It was so unexpected and awesome.

10177216_10154681585495360_1016199650658810439_n.jpg

We then headed back over to Arthur via the Grimm area. Like Efteling they have the donkey that shoots out a coin. However Europa decided to make the coin come from the mouth and not the arse.

Back in the Arthur area and Richard and Nic decide to go down the slides. Nic goes down one so fast and doesn't prepare herself that she flew right off the edge and slammed on to the floor, it was hilarious.

The animatronic ride op

The ride was just as good as the first time we did it. It's a great addition to the park. Afterwards we explored the Grimm area some more.

Each of those yellow buttons triggered some audio

It was then time for some food and we opted for the foodloop. There was a fair wait to get in. Food was averagely priced and was ok, nothing too special. Still the idea of how it all works is cool and obviously the reason for going. As we were leaving an item got stuck at the top of one of the high tracks and then when they finally nudged it down it got stuck in the loop! Looked like a right pain for the staff.

We then went upstairs to check out the delivery system (which is when we saw the one get stuck). They had a huge trailer, a reminder of the roots of the Mack family company, the whole restaurant was full of the history of the family company (mainly because it was above the park museum). I thought it was a nice touch.

1602139_10154681623820360_7395687575595424621_o.jpg

We then rode the Russian dark ride. It was random, small and quite dated. That last bit is quite common across the park's dark rides.

We then went for one last ride on Wodan which was great. It was then back to the car, a goodbye to Europa and hello to an hour or so drive up to Karlsruhe. We stayed in a hotel called ArtRoyal. It was a little weird but the staff were friendly and dealt with the issue that their cleaner hadn't prepared a 4th bed so gave us an additional single room at no charge. We then used their restaurant for some evening noms. It was all a little awkward, very hard to explain but it was. We all got pizzas and they were good, very tasty. We then got some rest before another long day.

Thanks for reading.

Yay for Peep PTRs <3

The singular existing photo does absolutely no justice to how utterly ridiculous my dismount from the Arthur slide actually was. It was a proper you've been framed moment. I flew off the end of the slide and stayed lying down completely flat in mid air before dropping to the floor with a thud. Kinda hurt, but so funny it was worth it.

Great report with some great pictures. I really miss Europa Park. Such a pretty and wonderful place.

One of the pieces of art in our room

We awoke at a sensible time and headed down for some breakfast, it had a good selection of food. After filling up on some nice food we headed onwards to Holiday Park. I first visited this park in 2010 and I was eager to return as it's now owned by Plopsa. There were quite a few groups at the park but apart from that it was fairly quiet considering it was a Saturday. I absolutely adore the new entrance area, it looks so inviting.

Just inside the entrance they had a few Plopsa characters roaming as well as this woman (who was not wearing enough clothing) playing with some rats. It was being filmed by the park for some sort of promotion.

Part of the new entrance area is a museum for the park. There's not a great deal in there but it's still interesting, we came back later for a closer look.

We decided to head straight for Expedition GeForce. My memory from before was that it was a good ride but obviously it's given a lot of hype in polls and that so I was intrigued to see how I'd find it now. Luckily there weren't many people around yet but as it was on a one train operation and dispatching was slow there was a fair amount of faff. So the ride then, it's a good solid coaster. The first drop is fantastic, especially at the back. However it does just randomly meander before an onslaught of (fun) bunny hills. Certainly not the best coaster I've ridden, but it is enjoyable. For those interested, the park are building a station building for the ride next year, what else they'll change along with this I don't know.

Next up was the log flume which had been re-themed to Wickie the Viking. It looks fab, they've done such an amazing job at re-theming it. There was no queue which was nice. The indoor sections were great and there was some FIRE! Didn't get too wet which was nice (weather was murky), a very solid attraction.

Next up was the new for 2014 cred, Sky Scream. Awful name, unusual theme (especially for Plopsa) but an interesting attraction. Obviously the ride doesn't have great capacity but the staff did a good job of dispatching the train really quickly, this caused the queue (albeit small) to move quite quickly. We decided to head for the back row for our first go. First impressions were put off a little with the annoying sharp pieces of metal you scrape as you attempt to get into the cramped space for the seats (actual seats were fine, but to move through was a mission). The launch was ok, then as you roll back through the station you gain a bucket of speed when you re-hit the launch, it's crazy. The hang time at the top is a bit awful and the trim before the sudden drop is actually quite suspenseful. Then you roll into the crazy loop but not malarkey which is amazing. It's a short ride that packs in a lot, I really enjoyed it, would prefer less hang time but you can't have everything.

Something I should also point out is that the outside is really nicely themed but the interior is still a blank canvas, it'll be interesting to see it finished.

Next up we did the lighthouse themed starflyer. I like these, find them quite relaxing. It was also the first one Plod had ridden, I think he liked it.

We then ended up in the Sky Scream area again where we noticed the shop had opened up. There was a decent array of ride tat which was nice as Plopsa don't tend to create ride-specific tat. Richard modelled a lovely hat for our pleasure....

We then headed over to the third and final cred the park has to offer. Holly's wild autofahrt is just a bog standard wild mouse cred. It's pants and had a burdenous queue. I was glad to hear they were removing this ride but it does beg the question as to what they'll buy next as they'll need a new family coaster to fill that gap in their offerings.

We then rode the omnimover dark ride. A sign seemed to suggest that live actors would be in the queue after a certain time but we never returned to check this out. There's some excellent ideas throughout the attraction but it's very poorly built and it's looking very dated. It's ripe for a revamp.

1604839_10154681652475360_4945463868590681961_n.jpg

Opposite is the rapids so we decided to give them a go. They were very choppy and fun, I think Richard got the main brunt of the splashes.

We then queued up for the drop tower which has been pointlessly been given a House of Anubis theme. It's a waste of a good IP, however I found it interesting that the large screen outside had the same clip from all the different versions (Belgian, German and British). The ride itself had quite a long queue but it was totally worth it, the drop is excellent.

10464235_10154681652765360_3242850618309378610_n.jpg

We then went to check out the Maya land, it was pretty much the same as the other one in De Panne but outside and had a few more attractions. There was also a world of giant sunflowers.

I really like their version of the dumbo ride as water squirts at you occasionally, I think it's a good ride so I forced everyone to ride this one.

Willy contemplates the idea of getting moist

We then popped into the museum again and paid a bit more attention to all the photos on the wall. Basically the park doesn't really have a lot of attractions and it never has. Yet it has a history of building rides and then getting rid of them a few years down the line. There were a few photos that took my fancy...

After delving into the past we headed over to another fairly new addition to the park, Tabalugas. It's a boat ride themed to this little dragon character and there's an evil snowman with evil seals as his henchmen, it's kinda amazing.

First you meet Tabaluga and his pals, they all seemed to be doing something and then you see the evil snowman (who is clearly amazing) who freezes over their World (how evil). It's all really cool and then Tabaluga and his pals heat away the ice and all is good (boo!).

We then went in search of food but got distracted with more HATS!

10648997_10154681656290360_4179182519305165819_o.jpg

We then joined a queue for a fast food place outside GeForce. A show started on the stage featuring that rat lady. It was all a little awful, there were two dancers poorly dancing and then occasionally a new animal would be given to the old lady who'd dance with said animal for a bit before giving it back. The queue for the food place barely moved so we gave up and headed onwards. We found an amazing bbq place in the viking area. The area was actually quite busy as not only were they serving incredible sausages but there was a mass of vikings around being filmed by the park guy. The area was also full of managers, no idea what it was all about but it was interesting to see. I met some of the vikings, he blew his horn, it was funny.

10644401_10154681656745360_8000883926706544961_o.jpg

We then went over for the main attraction, the park's jewel in the crown. "Hollywoods talking dead" was the park's new waterski show featuring ZOMBIES. Yep, zombies on waterskis! It was actually a very entertaining show, the host was amazing (so wish I knew German) and totally had the crowd in his palm, it was very funny, they had a woman cross the audience on a wrecking ball, there was an explosion, there were zombies on waterskis, it was amazing.

Oh yeah and the clown. Annoyingly we didn't fully understand her role because language barrier but it was funny, she was like an interpreter between the host and the zombies, it was just surreal and amusing.

We then headed over to Sky Scream for another go on that. Yep, still a great ride, very odd but really enjoyable.

664941_10154681660210360_8200312763900113060_o.jpg

We then headed over to GeForce for another go on that, as we went through the Viking area again there was yet more random entertainment. This time it was an Irish band, I like live music...

This time GeForce had a really long queue. How burdenous. We had to deal with some kids that were trying to cut past too which added to the annoyance. While we were waiting one of the trains came in, staff had noticed some girl had been filming on ride or had her phone out, silly girl. So the staff didn't just tell her off or anything, as the train was rolling in one of them went up to her with the sign of shame! He didn't just show her he proper shoved it in her face, it was amazing.

Then we got to ride, it was fun again but not outstanding. We then purchased some stuff in the shop, faffed around by the fountains before leaving really early. It's a nice park but there's just not a lot there, Plopsa are clearly on the right track by removing loads and replacing them with better attractions. They also seem to be focusing on events throughout the year and live entertainment which is clearly a good call what with there not being many attractions. Still, will be interesting to see what the park is like in say, 5 years.

So we were back on the road and this time our destination was Heidelberg. There was an odd large statue...

Not the most exciting area but further into town was more interesting

We went in search of a supermarket to get some bits and pieces. We took far too long which reduced our culture time in the town. We finally drove over to the center which is where things got interesting. Richard + Fiat 500L + city driving = chaos. How to deal with said chaos. Play Left bank 2.....

This is now a thing forever. It adds hilarity to a stressful situation. Try it, it's fun. In fact, play it while you read this next bit...

Richard cruised around the small streets of Heidelberg in search of a car park. We found one car park only to find it was closed. So we headed down another small street which led us into the main high street which was, obviously, pedestrianised. PANIC! Foot on the pedal we went across into satnav unfriendly territory, miraculously not killing anyone in the process. The stress of not really knowing where we're going plus this delightful little ditty was inspired and the brain child of Plod who just happened to have it on his iPlod. We continued driving frantically around the small streets trying to find a car park that was open. We were also wetting ourselves laughing (maybe a little bit in terror too). We finally found a nice little spot on a street. Upon further investigation it was not to be as it was residence only parking. So onwards and more near conflicts with unsuspecting Heidelbergians later we eventually discover a car park that is open, hurray! The hilarious drama was not over just yet. Richard still had to navigate the car through one of the tightest underground car parks known to man. Somehow he managed to find a space and park up, the song was stopped and we all breathed a huge sigh of relief... for now.

We went straight to the main high street to find somewhere to eat. We found a delightful bar where we had some very nice food. I also had a cocktail that was dirt cheap because of an offer they had on (happy hour that starts at 9pm?).

10694968_10154639850990360_606690896_n.jpg

I was pleased with my glowstick - clearly the only reason I got one

We then went on the hunt for the castle. We knew we wouldn't get right up to it but we thought we'd try and see it all lit up at night. We kinda failed but we did find some nice buildings along our random little journey. We also found a prison crammed inbetween loads of houses, very odd.

It was then back to the car. It was also time for some more Vision On music as Richard attempted to get us up to the castle. Back and forth, wrong turn after wrong turn, stalling at traffic lights at every opportunity, getting honked at by other drivers for being burdenous. As you can imagine it was fun and we didn't even make it to the castle! We actually gave up! It was back to the hotel where we chatted to our hearts content and then we slept.

Thanks for reading! :)

THE SIGN OF SHAME! This the absolute best way of dealing with people getting their phones/cameras out on rides. He shoved the sign right in her face, then walked along the platform, following the train still holding the sign in her face. When it came to a halt, he quickly told her off before letting her out of the train. It was clearly something he was well practised at and was pretty funny for us watching.

Also I absolutely cannot put in to words just how much more awesome Richard is when he's accompanied by the sounds of Left Bank 2. He needs to just have it playing out loud at all times, wherever he goes.

Sunday 14th

We left our hotel at a reasonable time and arrived at Erlebnispark Tripsdrill shortly after opening. There was quite a crowd still waiting to get in. Soon enough we were inside the park gates and admiring the nice entrance street. Unsure about the Mountain Dew water...

After looking at the map we quickly worked out that the park has a stupid layout. Instead of being able to just go right towards the creds you have to wind up past the swing ride, up a bit more, then past the wine barrel ride on the right and then down to then get to the path that eventually leads to credland. However as we were walking and trying to work this out some fellow British goons (no idea what site) were doing the exact same thing. All of us also ended up going the wrong way past the wine ride apart from Plod and I clocked on first and managed to get near creds quicker than the other goons [/smug].

Nicest car ride vehicle ever!

Unlike the other goons we went for the Tivoli first, it had a bit of a queue. On our way there we also saw one of the many (and very random) animatronic shows. This one appeared to be about a bunch of farm animals. Enough of that - there were creds to obtain! The Tivoli was one of the larger models and it was fun.

The park had many random side game things. This one was themed to a chicken laying eggs, well, it shot it out its bum into the mouths of unsuspecting animals...

10153679_10154681675145360_6453869391704791244_n.jpg

We then headed in the direction of the park's other coasters. A bouncy rope bridge was discovered, it was jumped on...

10696291_10154681676750360_9205928181332809987_n.jpg

We then queued up for Karacho. I was looking forward to this ride, I was just saddened to see that they hadn't finished the theming yet (maybe they never will?). Still, the cars are fab, the test seat outside is elaborately themed and loading was as efficient as you could get it. However the staff were fairly insistent on proper ramming the restraints down as much as possible causing them to be fairly uncomfortable. This didn't deter from the ride actually being great though, it's very fun, has some great inversions too. Also tunnels of awesome. There was the occasional bit of roughness but it wasn't anything that detracted from the ride or made it uncomfortable. The animatronic on the exit platform that vomits is also a big highlight as it's a really complex animatronic, his mouth proper moves in interesting ways, I thought he was awesome.

Next up was Mammut which also had a queue, burdenous. It looked like it could be fun and it starts off really well with an unexpected pre-lift hill dark ride scene with lots of effects and animatronics, that was cool. Then it goes down the first drop and well, it just sucked. I've never been on a wooden rollercoaster that is just so bland. You can see it's doing something but it doesn't feel like it at all.

It was then time to head over for the fun looking Gerst, G'sengte Sau. Interacting with a castle like building and a log flume it just looks fab. Unfortunately for us there was a long queue. It did mean we got to really stare at all the random things in the queue.

Apparently I didn't get any other photos in the queue. However it was random and something we clocked a bit later on is that each ride is themed to a different craft/job. So Mammut is themed to a wood cutter, Karacho is themed to a car mechanic (I think?), G'sengte Sau is themed to something random (there was a stables, so horse racing?), the log flume is themed to baths, rapids is themed to washing clothes and there are just as strange and odd ride themes as well. Anyway the ride is really fun and smooth, it makes me sad that some bits where it dives in and out of the building are just plain concrete, not even a lick of paint.

Creds done it was time to try out some of the other rides. First was the weird bath tub log flume. You may think that bath tubs is not an odd theme for a log flume, yeah, but other log flumes don't have a dark ride section full of naked ladies. It's just a bizarre ride but it's also actually quite good at being a log flume. Oh did I also forget to mention that the queueline has a museum in it on the history of washing, like, what?

We then headed over to the rapids for more odd queueline times. This had a full on queueline museum about cleaning clothes, there was a World of washing machines. WHAT?

Yeah, a map of where you're kettle originates from?

The rapids were ok, very choppy, my leg got drenched from a random wave. We then decided to grab some food. Cue like 30 minutes walking around not knowing what to do with ourselves. There was an indoor restaurant that was really busy but when we enquired the lady said they were now closed? It was confusing but we left and ended up getting some food from a kiosk. Nic asked for a burger (twas on the menu) and ended up getting a veggie burger?

10698450_10154681683935360_7199140314624117460_n.jpg

BUM

We then grabbed some ice cream because ice cream. The windmill slide was next, it started with quite a tight turn which was a little worrying with a Richard going down first, he has a tendency to get a little stuck on corners. It was all good though.

10703608_10154681683710360_1563018776422183869_n.jpg

We then went over to the drop tower themed to a treehouse, I liked the theming. The ride itself was random, the anticipation before it tilts forward is quite something though.

It then transpired that in this unassuming building was the start of a fun house. It was a little odd though because it was just a room with fun house like apparatus and then goes outside where it has some more? It's weirdly laid out too.

Inbetween the drop tower and the fun house in the light there was a lake with a boat ride on it. The boats were equipped with water guns. However these guns were themed to random household objects....

Underneath the restaurant I mentioned earlier we found another random museum. It was like a room of things.

We then roamed the little village area thing. It was full of interactive things and animatronics. There was a house where you could climb a ladder and an animatronic would come out and say something, a different one would come out every time someone would go up. I have no idea what it was about but the locals seemed to love it. Inside we found a labrynth of heat and more random animatronics. Unfortunately once we were in we couldn't escape as there were so many people inside. It took us forever to see daylight again.

Umm, so this is a thing in Germany. Clearly better than Dippin' dots because you can get them served in little plastic hats.

We headed back over towards Mammut when we saw an ambulance up by Karacho, there were quite a few staff members around too. Hopefully it was nothing serious.

10665708_10154681690920360_1734384867216188463_n.jpg

We then faffed around for a bit before actually joining the short queue for Mammut. It was still a bland ride.

It was then back to the entrance area where I found that a 'new for this year' thing was a toy museum, it was small.

We then left the park. It's an odd one, there's a fair bit to do, it's all quite quirky. Three of it's four coasters are good. Yet overall I felt quite let down by the park. So we left and travelled a fair bit to our next hotel in Stuttgart. We then had more car based drama! So get Left bank two at the ready and here we go....

There was a lot of construction going on near our hotel which meant that we weren't able to get down the road where our hotel's parking was. This resulted in probably over an hour of going round in circles trying to find somewhere to park that wasn't one of the following:
1 - illegal
2 - more expensive than entry to Disney
3 - a billion miles away from the hotel

Then as we attempt to navigate the many one way streets etc all hell break loose when this happens....

10704762_10154641326460360_2118299950_n.jpg

Yep, the top of the gear stick just came off in Richard's hand. Hilarious, scary and dangerous all at the same time. We panic pull over where Richard and Nic play around with it to get it to stick back together. A temporary solution was made and the chaos of finding somewhere to park continued.

We do eventually find somewhere to park and all is good in the World. We then check in to the hotel which was actually quite good (and also random). It was literally on the main high street and we had to go up two flights of stairs and then along a very long corridor which basically took us in to another building where we eventually found our room. It was quite a trek and a half but the rooms were large and the beds were quite comfy.

1966868_10154681694365360_204284249710534841_n.jpg

We went out for a Chinese buffet with an angry man working the till which somehow didn't kill us and had fried banana masquerading as chicken (sweet and sour banana is something I would like to avoid in the future). We then went to a nice pub with staff dressed in traditional clothing.

We then went back to the hotel for some more alcohol consumption and some rest before another interesting day.

Thanks for reading.

G'Sengte Sau is themed to sleigh manufacture, silly John :p

Still no idea where the bloody fun house is in Tripsdrill though... Silly place...

^Of course it is, silly me.

Monday 15th

The walk to the car in the morning with all our stuff was a little odd because everyone else was off to work and there we were with all our bags. Still soon enough we were on the road and a little while later we arrived at Schwaben Park. The car park was fairly empty which was expected, in fact I was shocked they even opened up in the week. As it's pretty much by the entrance we headed to Force-One first. It really stands out as soon as you pull up towards the park, I can only imagine it's done great things for them.

It's actually a very good rollercoaster. It occasionally has moments of great forces and is generally a very re-ridable and fun ride. It had a bit of roughness to it but not to the extent it took away from the general ride experience.

A slide themed to a space rocket was discovered. Nic and Richard decided it needed to be in their lives. Plod and I were sensible and could tell it was not built for adults.

We were stood at the bottom looking at this little hole for ages while Richard had proceeded to get semi stuck in the slide, he did eventually appear, as did Nic but not without their struggles and the echo coming down the slide of said struggle. It wasn't until they both appeared that we discovered mats for the slide. Doh! Richard decided to go again with a mat and it just added to the struggle.

We then found some animals! I'll be honest and admit I had no idea they had animals at this park before going, in fact I knew very little about the park. This Chimp was trying to break a piece of wood in half, he was putting a lot of effort into it but to no avail. I watched him for quite some time.

262659_10154698945770360_1617237687823108268_n.jpg

In the next enclosure was a Tiger, he was quite hidden.

10001208_10154698949330360_4920961750088165386_o.jpg

The Crazy Worm cred was next. We had to wait for a ride op to see us looking lost and to come over and open it. He then proceeded to give us 4 tedious laps. On one of the laps a bug hit my face which was really inconvenient.

10683540_10154698949625360_5820602257320365461_o.jpg

For some reason we then skipped the other cred to go for the bob karts next. They were powered and really fast, it was awesome. So awesome in fact that we got off and went straight back on.

It was then time for the third and final cred the park had to offer us - Himalayabahn. It looked rusty, old and like it was going to fall apart. However it rode quite well, didn't kill us and had some nice pops of airtime.

10271165_10154698949715360_8983172443480327650_o.jpg

10648362_10154698950560360_3336068511320847635_o.jpg

We then found the Nautic jets of death. None of us went on them but Richard did try. They had some weird self-operating seat things too which precariously dangled above the water.

We then did the big bumpy slide which was an effort to climb up but was fun. We then found the dodgems, no one else was near so the ride op just let us stay on. It was just us four on the dodgems for like a good 10 minutes. Was fun. Then it was time for the bouncy pillow surrounded by sand (or, referred to as Adele because she's like sand, gets everywhere).

It was then time for some more Force-One time. Still good. We then decided we had done everything we wanted to in this park and we were going to move onwards. Nic and I wanted to go check out the tat store first though so we went in search of that. The tat selection was dire, barely anything. It did have a model world thing though...

I got in one of the seats of the ferris wheel contraption, Nic started to make it move and that's when I decided to jump out, I didn't want to die, or worse, get stranded in mid-air in the middle of nowhere. So we left and headed to our next hotel which was in Ulm.

Some time later and we arrived at our hotel (at like 2 or 3pm). It was a really nice hotel and it was quite a surprise as to how nice it was. Nic and Richard faffed parking the car up while Plod and I got all the stuff to the room so we decided to play a trick. We had another bedroom seperated by a door so Plod moved loads of stuff in there, hid in there and we moved like a desk in front of the door in the hope they wouldn't notice. I then (poorly) told them that I went to the loo and upon exiting all of our stuff was gone and Plod was missing. Moments later Plod opened the door covered in a bed sheet (pretending to be a ghost?) and we all nearly wet ourselves laughing.

View from our room

We were a bit tired out from the last few days so we decided to take a break. After a while we decided to head into the main area of Ulm (like 5 seconds from our hotel) and see the big religious building - Ulm Munster. Nic decided to go for a coffee (or something) while we paid to climb up the many stairs to the top of the tower. *gulp*

Up we go...

It was all spiral staircases. I HATE spiral staircases. Especially ancient ones made out of stone where the mass footfall has eroded away parts of the steps. *shudders* Yeah mentally I wasn't doing so well. Going up was also exhausting as the weather was quite warm. There was a little break where for some reason you move from one side to the other. It was needed.

10633492_10154698961965360_4048664326443219500_o.jpg

But we weren't even half way...

10694333_10154698966350360_1266062342148247669_o.jpg

The view was already pretty good though....

10649093_10154698965865360_9121075364673282152_o.jpg

There was an indoor bit where you could look down on the bells, that was cool. The walls also had pictures of lots of other large religious buildings.

10698442_10154698966170360_3912014652991503458_n.jpg

It was then time to continue our ascent up to the top. It felt like it went on forever. We then arrive at the top, oh, but it isn't the top. Dammit! I decided to not do the next bit though, I was already starting to mentally freak out about the descent down the uneven stone stairs of impending doom. The fact that the next staircase was for people going up AND down didn't help. According to the other two it turns out at the very top there's not a lot of room and it was all a bit crowded. I still got a lot of amazing views though.

It was then time to go back down. FML. Luckily I didn't have anyone really in front or behind which meant I could take my time, and then I was able to become more comfortable with descending down the horrible staircase. So bloomin' dizzy at the end of it though, essentially walking in circles for a good 20 minutes.

We then found a Nic and continued our little tour of Ulm. We went in search of food, we came across this lovely area full of old buildings, we chose one of them for our place of food. They weren't quite ready to serve food yet but they were happy to start filling us with beer.

The food was amazing, we did order way too much food though. We all tried a piece of like a Bavarian equivalent of a pizza and it was amazing, I think we all wished we just ordered those (for the life of me I can't think of what they called it). Anyway, onwards. We found the river area of the old town which was lovely.

The whole of Ulm was just beautiful, full of old Bavarian buildings. It might not be much of a tourist spot but it felt like a really lovely place to live. Oh and the shop Closed was closed....

1175307_10154698974985360_4666302665364668407_n.jpg

We then found a small traditional pub, had some more beer before heading back to the hotel room to chill out and get some more sleep. It was a really good day, loved Ulm and although there isn't much at Schwaben it's an ok little park with the potential to do good things.

Thanks for reading.

Finally got round to catching up on this.

Loving the report so far, these German parks just look beautiful. How easy is Europa to get to without having a driver?

Tuesday 16th

The day started with an excellent hotel breakfast, really glad we paid extra for it in the end. We then got into the Frantic Fiat and headed over to Legoland Deutschland. This was to be Nic and I's second Lego park of the month and Plod's first ever visit to any Lego park. It was to be an interesting day full of no queues as the park was very quiet. I faffed around by getting myself a German Merlin annual pass. The staff were lovely and made the process very easy.

10171628_10154698977930360_5568764332787012157_n.jpg

We then headed in and onwards to our first cred of the day, Project X. It's the same as the one in Florida and Billund, nothing exciting about it.

We found some Lego based fountains of some instruments, when you stood on some squares it would set off their fountain and play some music. Half of it didn't work but it was still cool.

We found a SeaLife Atlantis, in the hope that it'd be a ride like Windsor and not a SeaLife like Billund we were saddened to discover (after a short pre-show) that it was in fact the latter. Boo.

This of course meant we were now near the Egyptian themed shooty ride. It was exactly the same as the others.

It was then in to the castle for the larger dragon cred. It starts off the same way as the others, then dips down and up into the lift hill. Overall it was a very meh coaster.

Next up was Ninjago, a Gerst sky roller. I had done one of these earlier in the year at Nigloland and I absolutely loved it so I was glad to be able to ride another one. The theme is also pretty fab, there's a little dragon that breathes smoke every now and then.

I really love this ride type, I managed to spin about 30 times before having to stop because it was just getting ridiculous, my vision started getting weird and everything. So onwards and next was something far more relaxed. Lego Fabrik was a fake mini Lego factory. Question.... WHY the hell is this the only Lego park with this????? For years I've said that Lego parks should have a fake factory so I was shocked and very happy to see that this park has one. When you enter you get given a little brick which is actually made on site. You then sit down to watch quite a fab little Fantasia-inspired intro video before getting to walk around the mini factory. There were plenty of buttons to press and everything was in German and English.

They've spited half of the arms for a large Lego Star Wars exhibition so we actually checked that out first. The X-Wing model is a full scale model and was like the largest Lego model ever made.

The arms actually had a bit of a wait due to a large group of Russians from some park in Russia, they were really burdenous and just kept getting in the way and just generally being annoying. Finally we got on though and we had fun. Plod and I had it on setting 4 which was quite intense and flung us all over the place. Nic and Richard actually broke down about half way through the cycle and was stranded up in the air, it was amazing....

After those thrills we decided to grab some food. We went in to a large restaurant in the Imagination area of the park. Richard and I had epic salads and we all got uber tasty desserts. It was some of the best park food we'd ever had and there was a great choice on offer.

As the weather was now really nice we decided to do the log flume. It was pretty awesome, it had a backwards drop and everything. Also got quite wet.

We then went back for more Ninjago times. I had to go on the ride after the others because the staff were useless and couldn't count. I yet again managed to spin over 30 times, it gets insane towards the end as you speed up the longer you spin.

There was only one more thing we wanted to do before we left and that was the wave racers. They're a fun attraction (with a poor capacity) and have some great interactive water effects. I think we all really enjoyed them.

10407985_10154699022675360_2020088251901187573_n.jpg

We then spent some time looking around the large store at the exit. There was an amazing Star Wars display where they had characters projected into the glass to make it look like they were going around the Lego set, I loved it.

10626870_10154699022865360_7796989681412279693_n.jpg

We then left after having a really good day out at Legoland. This is the second Lego park I've now been to and really enjoyed myself. It just feels like both the German and Billund park have so much to do compared to the Windsor park.

It was then over to our Munich based hotel which is where we would be staying for the next few days. The hotel was mainly chosen because it was cheap compared to most hotels we looked at and it's name translated into rollercoaster. GOONS! The hallways were littered with random photos and postcards with a few being random creds. Each room was also themed to an emotion and was all a little weird. There also wasn't a reception which was weird, I prefer my hotels to have someone there to greet you and look after your needs during your stay. Anyway we got parked up and got into our room...

What?

After some time sorting our lives out we went in search of food via admiring Octoberfest from behind the fence. We were so close to lots of creds, including Olympia Looping, but frustratingly it wouldn't open until the Saturday which was when we were too busy elsewhere.

426082_10154699023125360_1783604165137786723_n.jpg

Spitefest

Anyway we finally found some food after much wandering and it was good. It was then back to the hotel where I discovered that the 'cider' I picked up a few nights before was actually rancid, one of the most vile drinks I've ever tasted and I've tasted Beverly!

Thanks for reading. Warning: The next two days of report contain CULTURE!!!!!

Lego <3

That Miniland looks so fab, I was so disappointed by the Florida equivalent, no upkeep and only American stuff. The football stadium especially looks faaaaab.

That X-Wing Model doesn't actually look too big and when you think about the models of skyscrapers like below

487335_3907876789763_1248484691_n.jpg

Now I think about it, the stats say the X-Wing model is 13m across, and I'm doubting that the skyscraper is that tall...the X-Wing model just doesn't look particularly large :P

Can't wait to read about some of the culture too so keep 'em coming :D

Trust me, the X-Wing model is bloody huge, especially when you're stood right in front of it... Don't think pictures actually do it any form of justice...

It's weird how Billund and Germany's Legolands both seem to have a lot more around them compared to Windsor... Perhaps because that is actually the case, or perhaps because the attractions tend to be of a higher quality?

So I lied, there's another park before culture times...

Wednesday 17th

We headed out at a reasonable time to head over to Bayern park to get there shortly after opening at 10. A large Lion mascot greeted us in the car park.

1723402_10154699172085360_4174044637009925270_n.jpg

The park was quiet, it was just us, a few family groups and several large school groups (the kids from said groups were a little annoying at times and unnecessarily so). We obviously headed straight for the big coaster and the main reason why we wanted to head over to this park - Freischutz. I'd been looking forward to riding this since it started construction so was thrilled to finally be in it's crazy maze-esque queueline.

So there was quite a wait for the ride as it was being operated by one man who looked like he hated life. Slow batching + lots of unruly kids who somehow don't get the concept of waiting behind specific gates for a particular row = frustrating times. Anyway we were finally on the ride and I was rather excited. The launch was ok but I don't know what happened when they built it but it rides horrifically, it sort of shakes its way around which makes it a little uncomfortable to ride. It is forceful though. I would have liked another ride to get a fuller opinion but apparently the kids screaming, poor operations and the ride car shaking its way around was enough of a reason for the others to throw it into the 'never riding ever again' category and I didn't fancy my chances as a single rider amongst those kids.

Being a small family run park I was shocked to discover they had added four new attractions for this year. They had an enclosed drop tower so we had to check it out there and then. It's indoor queueline is also oddly designed with a maze-like feel to it. Despite the bare walls just being black corrugated metal where there is theming it is quite impressive. It's one of those small family drop towers which spins around as it bounces up and down several times. As you spin round you get glimpses of little animatronic scenes which light up, it's a fab design for something which is clearly on such a tiny budget. A+ for effort.

Part of the crazy queue

The others then wanted to do the bobsled thing in the far corner of the park so we headed over to that. I'm really not fussed by these sort of attractions and I don't understand why they're an extra charge. Ice cream was eaten so that was good. Looking back I wish we'd explored this area more as there's lots of animals around and who knows what else hidden amongst the thick forest.

Plod is a sad squirrel

Due to the small number of staff the park hire for quiet days they have rides open only during certain periods of the day which can be a little frustrating when you walk quite far to get to a ride that then isn't open for another hour or so. We came to one of these moments where only the flat rides were open so Plod and I did one of the spin and spews while we waited for the other coasters to open. I liked the theming of this ride.

10575227_10154699175360360_5770213090932053459_o.jpg

Plod and Richard then found a slope which you could go down in dingys. There was water at the bottom which got them a little moist.

1960934_10154699175455360_5675841787474427918_o.jpg

We then waited around a little bit more and then that fabulous sound of vibrating plastic seats roared from near where we were. The large Tivoli has opened! I do love the ridiculousness of these.

10431683_10154699175670360_1154210302536224778_n.jpg

Then we went and queued up for what was clearly the most popular ride in the park, the rapids of impending doom. Oh boy was it worth the wait. It looks like your standard travelling rapids ride but it's totally custom and it's actually insane. We span like crazy and every now and then there are heavily banked turns which we nearly topped, it felt like at one point it was going to throw Richard out of the boat. It was utterly terrifying and yet hilarious and exhilarating. So we came off and went straight back for round two where I nearly got ejected! Fun times.

Wetness

I then rode one of the other new for 2014 flat rides, Steinwirbel. It's a standard spinning log ride thing, they're fun. It too had a silly queue, seemed like a lot of effort for such a small ride.

We then found the tiny Tivoli hidden in a wooded area. It rode how you'd expect it to ride.

We then called it a day at Bayern and headed back into Munich. It's an odd little park with potential to be amazing, they just need a few more rides here and there. It'd be interesting to see the park on a busy day or one where there's more staff. Some areas of the park are actually really picturesque and it must be fantastic for families that live nearby.

After dropping the car back off at the hotel we headed over to the center of the city for some alcohol times at a very famous beerhouse...

The Hofbraushaus is absolutely huge, really wasn't expecting it to be that massive. It's like a cathedral for beer. We grabbed some food in the form of some sausages (obviously). They were tasty. Beer was had in large quantities. There was also a live traditional band which really added to the insane atmosphere. I've never been anywhere like it before, really has to be experienced to be believed.

We then went back to the hotel very tired and merry.

Thursday 18th

For the first time during the trip we had a giant lay in (could hear the cleaners downstairs as we were getting ready). It was refreshing and totally needed. Once we were ready we headed out into the center of Munich for some sightseeing and food. I think we then caught the underground over to Karlsplatz. It's a great area and one of the main shopping areas. We went in search of food.

I don't think I'd seen a church look like that before, it was very interesting. There was a small group of cellists playing outside, they were amazing. We then headed back over to the Hofbrauhaus to see if we could go upstairs to see the main hall but it was yet again closed off (boo!).

We then walked over to the Residenz which I'll explain a bit more in a mo. First we just walked around the massive gardens, listened to another Cellist perform and just relax. We also watched a Japanese couple having their wedding photos being taken, it was amazing to watch.

Nic decided she didn't want to do the tour of the Residenz and went off to see the Olympic area instead. So Plod, Richard and I went in. As we had got in there a bit late in the afternoon we were advised to only see the Residenz and the treasury. Which was a shame because I would have loved to have seen the theatre and if we didn't have a rough time to get back to Nic I think we could have seen it too. Oh well.

One of the courtyards

So what are the Munich Residenz? It started life as a castle in the corner of the City but grew quickly to become a giant palace that slowly took over a large part of the City. Kings, Queens, Bavarian dukes and Government people also stayed here at one time. As we soon learnt during our tour of the place, most of it was destroyed during the Second World War and reconstructed and opened to the public.

Model of the Residenz

We started off with the Treasury. We were given free audio guides, the lengthy introduction went on for ages but told us that if we listened to absolutely everything it wanted to say about the items inside it'd last like 3 hours, which is ridiculous. So we picked out what interested us most and as we went around we discovered that a lot of it just repeated itself. Meh, there was a lot of very interesting pieces inside. I took some photos.

It was then time to start our tour of the Residenz. As I previously mentioned, they (they building the audio guide and the small bits of text in some of the rooms) kept telling us how much was destroyed in the War and that pretty much everything we saw was a reconstruction with various artefacts they found decorating rooms to give us an idea of what it would have looked like during certain time periods. It all started off really interesting but towards the end there was just quite a few corridors of rooms which looked really similar and the layout of the rooms was always the same which meant the audio guide repeated itself a lot. So if you ever go, prepare for that.

This room was the family tree of the owners I think, was a lot of portraits.

And that was the end of our tour, it was tiring. So we went back out to the gardens where we found a Nic at a cafe, it was good timing as she'd only got there about 10 minutes before us. We sat down for a little bit before trying to make our minds up on what to do next. I think we opted for some food. We ended up at a little Italian restaurant, the food was great.

And that was the end of that day, it was exhausting as we did a lot of walking. But it was great to have a day that actually didn't involve going to get creds, it freshened us up for the last few parks of the trip and we learnt stuff about the Bavarian culture. We also had another day of culture to go!

Thanks for reading!

Friday 19th

We had to get up at a slightly more reasonable time for this day, we packed the car with all our stuff while Nic tracked down the man to check us out. We then drove an hour or two to Hohenschwangau which is a small town in Bavaria. Here lies two castles, Hohenschwangau Castle (where King Ludwig II grew up) and Neuschwanstein Castle (built by King Ludwig II on top of two medieval castle ruins). The whole town is pretty much a tourist destination now and is pretty much dedicated to being the central hub between the two. First we had to park up and then head over to the ticket office. Here we had to buy tickets for the two castles (we decided to not do the museum), the queue was quite long and we can only assume it's like this every day. Your then given a group number and time slot. This when you'll be allowed in to the castles. They only do tours in German and English and then for a whole bunch of languages they have audio tours (also at allocated times and a guide tells you where to go next etc).

That's all you're allowed to see of the castle, no photos allowed inside (I hear your sigh of relief :P ). Some photos do exist online so go search if you're interested. The tour was very interesting and the first main room kinda knocked me back a little bit and made me realise how recently these castles were actually occupied. What could possibly change my perspective of these places? Well the first main room was the billiard room. Although the first billiard table was invented in 1470 (thanks Google!) this was a slightly modern 19th Century version. I'm so used to seeing much older castles and as this was so different I found it much more fascinating.

So as I previously mentioned this is where King Ludwig II grew up with his parents and his younger brother. His younger brother was made out to be mentally ill and most of the tour talked about this and Ludwig's obsession with composer Richard Wagner - the latter stayed with the family on many occasions and has his own room. At one point on the tour we are actually shown a room in which Wagner composed music. The decor inside was amazing but at the same time the whole place was rather small and homely and you could actually see people really living there.

I should also point out that the tour felt very short and we totally didn't see even half of the premises. Still, what you do see is very interesting and I really enjoyed myself touring the castle.

We had a fair amount of time to kill before our tour of the main attraction so we had a little walk around the village and then had some lunch in a tiny cafe. The lake was beautiful, the natural water is just so clear and blue. Such a picturesque area, I love it.

You might be wondering why I'd be so happy to be at a castle or why it might be so famous. Well there's many reasons, one of which I'll have to find a better photo online of the entrance....

1920px-Schloss_Neuschwanstein_6862.jpg

Disneyland_Castle_Wallpaper__yvt2.jpg

Notice any similarities? The castle was used as inspiration by Walt Disney for the original Disneyland castle. This is so much better though, it's just a crazy feat of design and engineering. Huzzah for mental Kings building whatever the hell they like (he may have nearly gone bankrupt building it and never getting to finish it due to disappearing shortly after being de-throned but what does exist is incredible). So the castle was never finished which means that yet again the tour is very short, for some reason you don't go into the main gate building (where the King actually lived during construction) and you only get to see what was finished. Some of the unfinished rooms you get to see at the end because they were turned into tourist facilities (a projection room on the designs of the castle, cafe and toilets).

Added at a later date but was similar to the original plans

The tour yet again threw my expectations for a castle out of the window. This is so modern that it even has one of the first telephones! It has water plumbing throughout due to the natural pressure caused by the mountain water and location. It also has electricity so all electric lighting was actually installed at the time of the build! The castle took a stupid amount of time and money to construct because of the crazy interiors planned for each room. The castle also had a themes set around Swans and the stories of Wagner's operas. One room you go through is also an actual themed grotto! This place was just full of surprises and it's interior is just as beautiful and insane as it's exterior and location.

Some interior pics from Wikipedia...

This was the throne room, it was full of Gold, but never had a throne as it was still being made when Ludwig II suddenly and mysteriously disappeared.

1236834_10154699275535360_6021695935645878897_n.jpg

So once we left the tour we walked for ages (mainly back up the hill we walked down to get to the castle) to get to the bridge, so glad we did, the view was amazing.

We then did something silly and went all the way back over to the castle to take more pictures inside the courtyard. On the floor you can see the foundation bricks of the church that was to be built.

I love that they built the gatehouse first so King Ludwig II could live in there so he could watch the construction of the rest of the castle.

Ludwig II fact: He became a total recluse and in two of his other properties he had his dining room built with a table that lowered into another room where the servants could prepare the table and then send it back up to him - just so he didn't have to see anyone.

He's such an interesting character and he built such incredible places to live. The area where these two castle are in is just so beautiful I can totally see why he put so much passion into building something equally outstanding in the area. I highly recommend you go check them out if you get the chance.

We then drove up to our next hotel in Memmingen. It was a classy establishment. It two was historic in that it used to be a beer brewery. The interior was full of interesting old artefacts and there was even an odd room with some seating and paintings of the owners. It was a little odd but I loved that quirkeness about the place. The room was also great and comfy.

The town was also wonderful and totally traditional Bavaria. We went for a meal in the place opposite the hotel which was tasty. The entrance to the place was semi-guarded by awkward locals, you know the kind that just stare at you because you're not local.

After the meal we had a wander around the town which is when we discovered how nice it is, we ended up getting some ice cream too and just relaxing and enjoying the place.

It was yet another exhausting but excellent day. I've wanted to visit the castles for years (there's a restaurant in the Disney Village Paris themed to King Ludwig II) and was so glad I finally got to go. I was sad that you only get to see a small percentage of both castles but it is totally worth the trip.

We only had two more days of the trip left and so there are only a few more creds and bonus culture items left! Thanks for reading!

Saturday 20th

Our second to last day and it would be spent at Skyline park and then some country hopping. We pulled up at Skyline shortly after opening, there were a fair amount of other people in the park but not enough to create any queues. Weather was all over the shop though, started out a bit grim and damp and then got silly hot and then a bit wet again. Fun.

Credtrance?

Shortly after entering the park we discovered the amazing bumper car race track. OMG, more of these need to exist but more on that later. For there were creds to obtain.

10011715_10154699296075360_3167421357113331996_o.jpg

Soon

First up was the butterfly. There used to be two but they spited one for some reason, you can still see the patch where it used to be. We watched a ride testing which created a small debate of whether it's a cred or not. We didn't ride it in the end (long cycle and we wanted to get moving) but there's probably quite a few peeps that'd count it...

10397023_10154699296260360_7107447258625882997_o.jpg

Next up was the batflyer. It had a bit of a queue and operations were a little faffy. Instead of just the single bike position seating arrangement it was 4 normal seats inward facing in a circle. It was actually quite fun and we span occasionally creating mixed responses from the four of us.

Plod poses under the arch to nowhere

Next up was the park's largest coaster, Skyloop. This actually had a bit of a wait because it's faffy too. I didn't approve of it because it's just hangtime and little else - I loathe hangtime. They were also giving everyone two laps so ALL the hangtimes. Vile.

Next up was the Wildcat rollercoaster. It made an horrendous sound as the cars went around the track, like worse than the sound of a Richard waking up in the morning. In the end it rode really well and was fun, the cars look fab too.

Plod and I then waited to ride the spinny cred, which used to be the horrific thing at Camelot. Somehow they managed to fix it up and it looks quite nice now and it rides really well. In our car we had two small girls which resulted in stupid-crazy spinning. Fun. I don't have a picture of the cred so please make do with a photo of Richard trying on this hat...

10350511_10154699305660360_9057157037406331949_n.jpg

It was then time for us to go on the crazy go kart dodgems. They were awesome despite their not being enough laps and a couple of kids being burdenous at life.

We then left the park after a couple of hours having ridden all the creds. The park was a little bit of a dump and there wasn't anything extra we wanted to ride. So it was onwards to our silly country hopping journey. We started by driving down to Bregenz in Austria for a spot of lunch. As you do. This was a last minute addition to the trip suggested by Richard. It's slightly famous for the opera scene in Quantum of Solace. It's actually quite a fab little city, just chilling by this massive lake. We had the perfect weather while there too...

The opera house

1654524_10154699309515360_5594516247711159834_o.jpg

Hello Germany

We had lunch at this fab little cafe by the lake. Poor waitress was pretty much alone and there were about 30 tables to wait. It was a little comical, if you wanted to order or pay you just had to call her over, she was always busy with someone else but she was fab at life and made the whole ordeal amusing. It did mean we spent longer at the cafe than we would have liked but it was still worth it. After the fab food (ice cream was involved - always a good thing) we popped over to the big opera house.

10700334_10154699309625360_180382149968588864_o.jpg

So it turns out that each opera they put on is there for a year or two and the sets are always ridiculous and amazing. Unfortunately we caught it at a time between shows, this one had just finished a two year run and was half torn down. Still, it was nice that you could just waltz in to take a look.

10623537_10154699310010360_2848704955655493949_o.jpg

We then walked around a bit more before getting back in the car and driving over in to Switzerland. We then drove over a river and boom we were in Lietchenstein. It's a very tiny country. It's surrounded by mountains and Switzerland. We drove up a ridiculous portion of a mountain to get to one of it's castle's. It houses the current Prince but we didn't know this till some Google searching in the evening. Funnily enough we bumped in to two British ladies while snooping around the royal property (which totally has GET OFF OUR LAND type signage everywhere). I would also like to mention that the views were stunning and the streets appeared to all be covered in manure (pretty much every joke you could make about this fact was covered on the trip).

We then chilled out, had some lovely food in the restaurant downstairs and then spent ages watching the ridiculous storm from our bedroom.

It was a random day, what with breakfast in Germany, lunch in Austria and dinner in Liechtenstein. Yay for European country hopping :D

Sunday 21st

Our last day of the trip was already upon us and we had left the most random park of the trip till last. Oh yeah, it was time for the oddity that is Conny-Land! Based in Switzerland this park arrived on my radar when they were building their brand new attraction, Mammut Tree. Obviously when we arrived we wanted to go straight on Cobra (their sole cred) but it wasn't due to open till 12. We had two hours to kill in a very small park so we did pretty much everything and I'm so glad we did.

Testing!

Once inside we saw the amazing station for the cred...

10357634_10154699331890360_6609946905309498755_o.jpg

10520574_10154699332045360_8213678858248439389_n.jpg

Obviously with that closed we headed straight for Mammut Tree. Where should I start with this? Let's talk about the ride vehicle. As you may have noticed the ride system is very simply a cable car that goes through a large tree and then back again. The seating arrangement was 4 rows of 4 with a single lap bar for each row (quite the head chopper so watch out if you ever go). The seats were actually quite comfortable and it all felt very open and scary, what with the metal grate flooring which you could also see through.

1980260_10154699332250360_3882075779666843925_o.jpg

So we board with a few other randoms, we're locked in and then our journey begins. This things jumps up and down like there's no tomorrow as it goes along the cable, so with added transparent floor and not alot around you it can be quite daunting. You pass through the massive tree. Stop for a brief moment and then head back in to the tree where the doors when close and everything actually becomes pitch black. What happens inside I'll leave in a spoiler tag....

Storm sound effects start up, then there are some lightning flashes, then some wind and rain machines start up. The storm gets rather fierce and the car bounces around all over the place. The storm then 'strikes' the tree and FIRE happens all up the walls, there are like a good 6 flame throwers in there. The storm then stops, the doors open and the sound effect of a man yodelling goes off before you make the journey back to the station.

The journey back to the station was even more bouncy than the way in which creates epic amounts of air time, to the point where seasoned cred-riders like us were not so sure about our life choices.

10515335_10154699332475360_7241277067146761957_o.jpg

I've never seen such a small park create something so unique before, it's quite simply brilliant. It's terrifying in all the right ways and yet it looks so innocent. Then on top of that the special effects inside made me happy in the face. It was worth going out of our way a bit purely for this attraction. Yet there was still so much more to see. There was a slide, Plod and Rich were insistent that they went down them. Soggy bottoms happened.

1653739_10154699333420360_178071912592461883_n.jpg

Next up was Space Trip. It's a simulator (film clearly made for a park in the States or something) with a long queueline themed to the hilt with an array of randomness because it was all done on the cheap.

So much awesome happening inside

We went over to the dark ride, Dino attack. It was a total Jurassic Park rip-off but it was kinda amazing in that tacky way. The music inside was from Van Helsing which worked really well.

The park is odd, especially that they take up lots of room with a sealion arena and then have some random bird cages. They also have a massive tent for a parrot show. The woman running it was clearly insane which made it all rather amusing. Some of the birds liked doing their own thing too, the whole thing was chaotic.

We then went over (past the large swimming pool thing) to the splash battle rapids. I've never seen anything like it so Richard, Plod and I decided to give it a whirl. Not only are the boats tiny but it's rather dull. Well apart from the random geysers going off and the massive drop.

I actually thought we were going to tip over on the drop, it was terrifying. My feet got drenched as the boat ended up having several inches of water in it.

After our scary water travels it was nearly time for the Cobra to open! We made sure we got another go on Mammut Tree first. It's still epicly awesome. Oh and has this amazing height sign...

Then it was time to ascend the Cred Asaires...

It tested and we watched in fear....

Then after lots of faff the two ops finally opened the ride and we ended up towards the back. The winch pulled us out of the station and very slowly up the tower, it was unnerving to say the least. The winch then let us go and we hurtled through the station, over the little hill, through the loop and then up the crazy spike at the other end. It was then time to go backwards through the same elements. It was incredible. Well that's what Plod and I though, Nic and Richard didn't agree. So while they faffed around we went for round two. Very similar experience to a Vekoma GIB, the gut-wrenching drop-tower-esque start and then some elements that you just fly through.

We then wandered around a little bit as there was another area we hadn't really seen, it was nice. Needed something else though.

I then went off and took lots of pics of Cobra because it's amazing (and the sky went a bit blue <3 ).

We then jumped in the car and headed to Zurich. The plan was to just have a bit of a wander and then grab some food. However the weather turned and we ended up having to switch that plan around, we were literally wandering and admiring the area and then the rain really came down, it was ridiculous. We jumped into quite a posh steak restaurant. The staff were quite awesome though. Sort of wish we sat somewhere else though as the breeze coming through the door was quite cold. We had Horse steaks just because it was weird to see that on a menu, it tasted good.

The river was uber blue because of the mountains and it leads into a massive lake. There were lots of Swans.

We then had to get back to the car and drive to the airport. The drive around the airport was tedious at best as we had to get to the French side but we kept ending up at the Swiss side, then lots of roads were closed off and diversions were useless and then there were dead ends so no one could just happily jump over the border wherever they like. We must have spent a good hour driving around the area of the airport, it was really frustrating.

We had left ourselves plenty of time though so we didn't miss our flight or anything like that. It was all rather easy too. Until our flight decided to have delayed times for a reason I can't remember. It was yet again, more frustration. Still we finally made it back home safe and sound, just a little later than planned.

Despite the horrible end to the day we really enjoyed Conny-Land. It's small but they've packed it with some interesting attractions and the few locals that are near must love it. I found Zurich a bit dull, but then we didn't give ourselves much time to explore and on a Sunday most things are closed. Still it was an interesting way to end our amazing trip. We did so much that I've wanted to do for ages and we just had a great time.

Thank you very much for your comments and for reading, I hope you've enjoyed reading about our time in Germany/Austria/Liechtenstein/Switzerland/France.
