31/7/2014 - SFGAm Mini-PTR

BBH

Giga Poster
I went to SFGAm today with a friend. We got there just about as the gates opened into the park, and we walked onto the back row of Viper. There's a good reason why it's my #2 at the park. Its airtime in the back is so intense and extreme, especially in the double-down; it's definitely something that you'd never expect of an innocent-looking Cyclone mirror image.

We then headed off to Raging Bull's 20-minute wait. It continues to impress me the more I ride it. Those trims bite hard, though.

Giant Drop is your standard amazing Intamin Second-Gen freefall tower.

Because my friend and I could make procrastination an Olympic sport, we rode Revolution, a Huss Standard Frisbee. It was decidedly "meh."

We then headed over to Goliath. We waited in the temporary queue (about 45 minutes) and then headed up the Flash Pass entrance as single riders. We were on in 1/4 of the time as most other people in line (queue times were slightly mental). Still amazing and by far the best ride in the park.

We then had lunch at Johnny Rocket's, the line for which took half an hour to struggle through. They got my order wrong but I wasn't about to complain and cause any further holdups. To settle down, we rode Columbia Carousel, a bloody huge Chance carousel that opened with the park in 1976 that takes an absolute eternity to stop. Then we took up two rows of Whizzer. Such a fab little Schwarzkopf.

Six Flags seem to be constantly adding new things to the park while letting their operations and clientele just sink into oblivion. Which is unfortunate, but it allows for single rider lines on Batman: The Ride and Superman: Ultimate Flight. We SRL'd Batman once. The intensity of this ride still amazes me after riding it at least once per visit going on 3 years.

BTW, this sign in the queue is fab:

You know who Bolliger & Mabillard are. Jim Wintrode was the park's president back in the 1990's and was the one who asked about the possibility of the inverted coaster and presented the idea to B&M. "Prototype Electric" is a reference to the fact that SFGAm's B:TR is the prototype inverted coaster. "Coke & Pohlman" name drops Six Flags' long standing partnership with Coca-Cola and Gary Pohlman, SFGAm's maintenance director. I have no idea what "H. Hudson" stands for, though...

We hit Goliath again, where I noticed these old footers from Iron Wolf:

The last remnants of the first B&M.

We went back for another round on Viper. Yep, still fab.

We rode Orbit next, a Huss Enterprise. One of the better flat rides at the park, considering the limited selection.

Eagle actually had a 25-minute queue which surprised me. You get the world's most intense Footsie-Wootsie massage on the "out" of the out-and-back, which is growing slightly bothersome the more I ride it. The (extremely) large helix is (extremely) rough and jerky, but good fun nonetheless. Then the ride just goes absolutely bonkers on the return run and it reminds you of why I have good reason to rank it so highly.

By then, it was getting late, so we decided to hit up X-Flight for a night ride. 45 minute queue to get into row 3 on the right wing. Uuggghh even the Immelmann is getting rattly now, and it's my favourite coaster element. Probably drops below Powder Keg and Wildfire now. <////3

Although my night did end on a high note as while I was watching Six Flags Grand Finale, I met Hank Salemi, park president. Really nice guy, cares about what his guests think enough to give you his full attention when you speak and are giving suggestions.

Our final ride count:

Viper - 2
Raging Bull - 1
Giant Drop - 1
Revolution - 1
Goliath - 2
Carousel Columbia - 1
Whizzer - 1
B:TR - 1
Orbit - 1
American Eagle - 1
X-Flight - 1

Thanks for reading. And to celebrate this poorly thrown-together PTR, here's an offride of X-Flight at dusk. Thank you for reading, etc.

^Really? It made the Huss startup noise so I assumed it was a Huss model. Thanks for the clarification.

Good trip report.

Completely agree with you on Viper, what a brilliant ride. When myself and Jerry rode this I wasn't expecting anything but a +1, heck, even Ian sat out (he had the cred from 7 years previous) but it really was a fantastic experience; the airtime was phenomenal, such beautiful floater. I'd definitely put it number 3 in the park after Goliath and Raging Bull.

Also pleased to see you're a fan of Goliath. It really doesn't look anything out of the ordinary from the POV's but riding it is a pretty special experience. Probably my favourite woodie alongside Boulder Dash.

Again, good report!
