Wild Eagle opens at Dollywood

Sorry for the delay in posting this, but I've been sick for the past two days & just couldn't get to it until now.

Wild Eagle, the newest B&M wingrider, opened at Dollywood on Friday, March 23rd for members of the media & season pass holders.
It's an 11 hour drive from New York City, so I hit the road on Thursday to make sure I could be there bright & early the next morning.

Of course I couldn't drive past Dorney Park...

I arrived at my hotel in Pigeon Forge (Rodeway Inn $23 a night lol) just before midnight, so straight off to sleep. Up at 7am *ss&s* then off to the park for the 8:30am breakfast.
I got there a bit early & had to wait for the media will call to open, but I was the first to register which meant I was in the first group to enter the park. Renee, on the right, was our group escort for the day.

The Coaster Zombies showed up a little while later with their own Wild Eagle hats. :lol:

Since we were first in the park, we were first to eat. However we were too early & had to wait for a few minutes before chowing down on scrambled eggs, sausage, onions, peppers & biscuits. Yum!
They even had a bluegrass band to keep us entertained,

And since we were first to eat, we were first to leave & head around the park to the coaster.

The first thing you notice is the giant metal eagle sculpture. It's stunning!

Right away I spotted a place near Adventure Mountain overlooking the entire staging area, so I nabbed a spot on the railing to film everything.

After the second train with winning bidders made its round, it was time for me to give it a go.

It took about three minutes & is a great addition for handicapped riders.

By now it was noon & time for lunch. After eating a giant slice of pizza (new at Dollywood this year) I headed back for the coaster. Here's the eagle without all the media hanging around.

Looking over the ride entrance toward Adventure Mountain where I was for the opening ceremony. At one point the queue line stretched all around to Tornado.

After a leftt front ride it was time to move on & see how much of this coaster can be seen or filmed throughout the park.

After seven rides & all the major seats covered I have to say that the back right is my favorite. The coaster has a very soaring feel to it (much like B&M flyers tbh) with some near misses here & there. Nothing like Raptor where the near misses were strategically placed, but much more organic. With it's placement on top of the hill & the coaster soaring through the trees, the theme is very fitting. In fact - spot on.
If Dollywood wasn't on your must-do list, it better be there now. Wild Eagle tops Raptor IMO. I've still got Swarm & X-Flight to go, but they'll be hard-pressed to beat this one. I guess I'll find out in another six weeks.

Brilliant report, the detailing around the coaster is stunning. THAT'S how you you do a simple, low theme, station. Loads of little details around it.

I watched the POV, and the ride looks good. Is there much air on that last little kind of bunny hill?

However, I'm not too keen on the trains. I like the eagles, and the way there's the extra theming to make it look like you're sat on the wing, but the stark industrial metal front of the train under the eagle ruins it. I don't know what could have been done to improve that though. From the top it looks okay and the back, but from the front it looks like a seagull on some scaffolding.

Loved the report and pictures. Will watch the videos when at home.

A park on my wish list already so maybe in a few years we will be able to go.

I really like the trains, they're really neat and cool looking. This is going to sound strange, but the whole area and the station and things reminds me of a zoo habitat/area. Really nice though, incredibly classy for a park themed around Dolly Parton ;]

I want to go to Dollywood SO freakin' bad.

A comment I've read is that it's a bit tame for Six Flags, a bit intense for Disney, but PERFECT for Dollywood.

Looks like I need to get back to Pigeon Forge.

How does Wild Eagle impact the surrounding area? Especially with Mystery Mine's ominous area so near by.

^I'm not exactly sure what you mean by impacting the surrounding area, but since it's located at the top of the hill behind Mystery Mine, River Battle, Barnstormer, Daredevil Falls & Mountain Slidewinder & almost completely hidden by trees, I don't think it has any impact.

I filmed from the right front seat since the park's official POV is from the left front seat.

That back-seat POV looks fantastic. I love how the trains seem to glide through the trees, you really get a good sense of how it sits in the forest from that video.

Just finishing up my Carowinds/Dollywood trip now and got a few rides on Wild Eagle. Can't say I was that impressed. Before this trip I was really thinking that Dollywood scooped up the best layout of all the wing riders so far but now I'm starting to doubt that a bit.

I'm going to put up a trip report as soon as I get a chance so I'll go more in depth then but I have a few initial comments about it:

First of all, it seemed like no matter where you sat on the train a few elements would be perfect and then the rest be slightly boring or utter crap.

For instance, the first drop/loop/airtime hill we're all fantastic in the back row, but then the zero-g and wingover we're iffy. Then if you sit say, in the middle somewhere the zero-g and wingover are both executed great, but the loop and first drop weren't as good. So there was this tradeoff that really bugged me.

And yes, I know that this is not a problem with wing riders alone, but I believe it's a problem exacerbated by the heaviness of wing rider trains.

I must say though, the drop and the loop were verging on orgasmic in the back row.

Like any coaster if you're in the back on a drop you will get far more airtime than if you're in the middle or the front. Wild Eagle's drop in the back seat was straight up ejector filled amazingness while the middle gave just good floater. Front almost feels like you're stalling through the first part of it.

Much like any B&M with a straight drop but even more noticeable due to the large trains.

And yes, I'm probably to picky for my own good.
