Liseberg and Tusenfryd (29th + 30th June 2009)

Peter

Hyper Poster
Randomly, straight after Plopsland me and Mark (Mushroom) headed over to Sweden and Norway to visit Liseberg and Tusenfryd. First port of call was Liseberg, where we also met up with Peter (Loefet) and his brother Marcus for the day. :)

Early morning fog at Stansted delayed us by about 30 minutes.

This isn't our plane, but it's what we flew on. Taken whilst we were sitting on the taxiway waiting for clearance for takeoff.

5528_139194642976_758612976_3087906_4197142_n.jpg

Bye bye England!

5528_139194657976_758612976_3087908_831655_n.jpg

Hello Sweden! The coast of Gothenburg looks really sweet from the air.

5528_139194672976_758612976_3087910_2080024_n.jpg

Turning into final approach. If you look carefully, you can just about see the runway we'll be landing on.

5528_139194682976_758612976_3087912_2179607_n.jpg

Thats good, at least we have a nose wheel to land on.

Touchdown!

Thank you Mr Plane.

Ok, so this is supposed to be a report about Liseberg not planes, so i'll go to the coasters now. :p

Welcome to Liseberg! We met up with Peter and Marcus just outside, and they got us free entry into the park with their ECC passes or something. Thanks guys! :)

5528_139194732976_758612976_3087920_1436976_n.jpg

First port of call was Rabaulder since it was right by the entrance.

5528_139194762976_758612976_3087924_4364208_n.jpg

Then onto Lisebergbanan, or the Banana ride as we called it. I was a little disappointed by this purely because it was so over-hyped and I was expecting something really special. Front row near walk on was a good sign to start the day.

Mark tries on the Liseberg bunny rabbit ears. ^_^

Kanonen came next, which was much better than expected. Front row again with only a 10 minuet queue. I found it to give a very smooth ride for it's size with a fair bit of force. I dunno why it gets slated so much.

5528_139194817976_758612976_3087932_4687025_n.jpg

Balder and the last credit next. This coaster blew me away. Probably my number 2 coaster if I actually bothered to rank them. The airtime it gave was amazing and the pace lasted throughout. I'd happily go back to Liseberg just to ride this baby again and again and again.

5528_139195132976_758612976_3087983_3014984_n.jpg

Having got all the credits, front row on each, with only about an hour of the day gone, we took the last 10 hours slightly slower. Rapids came next, where Marcus found some random flannel thing.

5528_139194842976_758612976_3087937_4288842_n.jpg

They sold Plopp in Sweden. Having just spent the day at Plopsaland, we had to buy some and try it later!

5528_139194882976_758612976_3087944_1561504_n.jpg

Upswinger came next, which whilst only the same sort of size as Rush, it gave a much better ride purely because it's hanging off the side of a hill!

5528_139194932976_758612976_3087951_4445791_n.jpg

The shot/drop tower came next, which are your usual S&S towers, nothing special. It was bloody hot though, probably in the early 30's*C, so we stopped for epic messy icecream!

5528_139194937976_758612976_3087952_2688234_n.jpg

The log flume came next which got me drenched. I was at the front, and a huge wall of water came pouring into the boat after the first drop alone! Check out the ORP in the ORP section of the forums. :p I don't think i've ever come off so wet on a log flume - I bet Mark will post the photo later.

5528_139194952976_758612976_3087953_7568854_n.jpg

Rest of the day was basically spent re-riding the coasters.

5528_139194957976_758612976_3087954_2658221_n.jpg

We hit the observation tower at one point in the afternoon, which gave great views of the coasters and Gothenburg.

We finished the day just whoring Balder, then onto Upswinger and a final ride on Lisebergbanan. It was still only about 8pm (park closed at 10pm) and 0 minuet queues still!

5528_139195222976_758612976_3088001_7426324_n.jpg

We left a few hours early having done everything we wanted, and an early start tomorrow to catch the train to Oslo.

...and that concludes Liseberg! Thanks to Peter and Marcus for an excellent day and acting as our Swedish tour guides (and a lift back to the train station at the end.)

Tusenfryd trip report to come soon.

So the next morning we were up at something silly like 5am to catch our 4 hour train ride up to Oslo.

5528_141782552976_758612976_3138904_3469232_n.jpg

Interior of the train was well sexy, well compared to anything British, with automatic doors, coffee machines and toilets in every carriage.

5528_141782557976_758612976_3138905_3226819_n.jpg

...and that was when the good stuff ended. We got stuck at the next station for 2 hours due to a problem with the bridge ahead which was very frustrating. The day was already cut short with all the travelling we had to do, and a 2 hour delay wasn't helping! We did get a free hot drink out of it though.

Eventually we got moving though. Welcome to Norway!

5528_141782567976_758612976_3138907_2422704_n.jpg

We finally get to Olso and then spend 15 mins trying to find the right bus stop. We've been up and travelling for nearly 7 hours now and still not got to the park.

Mark looks nackered already and we've not even started on the hills of Tusenfryd yet!

5528_141782592976_758612976_3138910_2117797_n.jpg

Finally at something like 1:30pm we arrive, and are greeted by one of the best looking park entrances around.

5528_141782607976_758612976_3138913_7561917_n.jpg

Somehow or other we managed to convince the staff in the kiosk to give us a whole load of park maps. We ended up coming away with about 50 between us, so if anyone wants to do some park map swaps, get in touch! ;)

First port of call was Speed Monster, which fortunately only had a 5 minuet queue.

5528_141782642976_758612976_3138919_1129089_n.jpg

I think both me and Mark were let down by this. It looks amazing, and the Norweigan Loop is very forceful, but the rest of the layout just meanders back to the station with no real purpose. You get a few pops of airtime, but that's about it.

Loopen came next, which is your average Vekoma looping coaster, just with a slightly more unique layout.

5528_141782657976_758612976_3138922_919805_n.jpg

5528_141782672976_758612976_3138924_1693520_n.jpg

Then onto the highlight of Tusenfryd - Thundercoaster!

5528_141782722976_758612976_3138930_520813_n.jpg

5528_141782932976_758612976_3138959_6226363_n.jpg

I really enjoyed Thundercoaster. It was fast, rough and brutal but amazing fun, with some really extreme airtime in places. It's supposed to be worst now with the re-tracking, so god knows what it was like originally!

Credit whoring on the worlds smallest coaster next - Teeny Weeney. I'm surprised the ride-op allowed 2 adults to ride without a kid, but we got on with no problems. We even got a hi-five with the ride op each lap.

There was a Supersplash ride hidden in the corner down a huge hill. It had a fair size queue of about 15 mins since it was really hot and humid. Like all other SuperSplash rides, this one also fails to get you wet.

Rollercoaster themed drink vending machine FTW.

5528_141782857976_758612976_3138949_4010379_n.jpg

Last credit was some camp powered dragon coaster.

5528_141782862976_758612976_3138950_5463235_n.jpg

New for 2009 was SpinSpider, a giant frisbee. It had the longest queue of the two days (about 25 mins) but we had to ride it due to it's sheer size and the fact it was new.

5528_141782877976_758612976_3138952_1774881_n.jpg

It really was effing huge and gave great views from the top (especially since Tusenfryd is built on a hill) It only had 1 operator though, so loading and unloading 40 odd people took ages.

We rode Thundercoaster again and also the Log Flume, probably one of the poorer log flumes around - short layout and no wetness at all.

5528_141782957976_758612976_3138962_837469_n.jpg

We heard a lot about the dodgems at Tusenfryd so had to go ride them on the way to Speed Monster. They were epic! The dodgems drift everywhere, even without being hit. If you get hit on one of the back corners you'd easily do a 180* if not 360* spin. It's the first time i've need to put in opposite steering into a dodgem car to get it around a corner.

Final ride on Speed Monster, front row to finish the day before heading back to the bus station to go to the airport.

5528_141782972976_758612976_3138965_1077571_n.jpg

We would liked to have had more time in the park, but the train delay cut two hours out of our day, so we only ended up with about 5 hours in the park. Still, with queues being hardly more than 10 mins for each ride, we got everything done.

The bus journey to the airport went smoothly and Mark even managed to get on free since he's Ryanair staff.

Back on one of these things...

5528_141782982976_758612976_3138966_2423511_n.jpg

Oslo Torp airport had free internet, so we whored CF whilst waiting in the departure lounge.

Brings back so many great memories :)

Fail not liking Banana though! :p

I loved Tusenfryd for some reason, but I don't know why. None of the rides is actually really stand out, but I just really liked the park. I can't believe you didn't do the snake on a stick dragon boat ride!

I liked Banana, it just didn't live up to expectation. Don't get me wrong - it's a great ride, but not as thrilling as I expected it to be.

Great! Just been to both places, and I understand what you mean.

1 op on SpinSpider is FAIL. 25 minutes of queuing is far too much at TusenFryd.

ThunderCoaster pre 2006 was really wow. I assume you've ever played Mario Kart: Double Dash!!? Remember the Chain Chomp Special Attack? Well, that's a fair representation of ThunderCoaster in its glory days. The airtime put balder to shame, and the coaster never wanted to go the same direction as your inertia. Awesome.

And you had much more luck with the queues at Liseberg than we had. 30 mins for everything. :(

To second what Pokemaniac says, when we visited in 2007, Thundercoaster was the stand out woody of the trip for pretty much everyone over Balder. It offered a much more consistent and airtime filled ride than Balder 99% of the time. That 1% ride on Balder was absolutely blindingly fantastic though and just put Balder above TC for me. I also hated the foot rattling on Thunder Coaster :(

So yeah, ThunderCoaster pre 2008 = Awesome! :)
