Occasionally, I come across semi-relevant news without really looking for them. I stumbled across this reading the newspaper today. It seems like Norway's third (or fourth?) biggest family park is going to add a coaster.

Il Tempo Extra Gigante will be the first coaster in Hunderfossen Familiepark. The coaster is inspired by the most succesful Norwegian movie of all time, Flåklypa Grand Prix (1975), more specifically the iconic race car "Il Tempo Gigante":

1390212432197_250.jpg

The train was hand-built by car enthusiasts in Munich. Hunderfossen has been the home of the full-scale promotional model of Il Tempo Gigante for many years, so it was really about time to make a coaster out of it.

Concerning the coaster itself, I haven't been able to find much. All the Norwegian media, and the park itself, only seem to focus on the train due to its iconic looks. All I've found is a tiny render, as well as some specs which were well-hidden within the text of the press release:

2282-13-banenteknisk2-400x300.jpg

  • Ride length: 550 metres
  • Ride height: 25 metres
  • Ride duration: 1 min 30 sec
  • Top speed: 65 km/h
  • Max. G: 3.5
  • Max. banking: 72 degrees
  • Steepest drop: 45 degrees
  • Number of riders: 14
  • Opening date: May 24, 2014

No idea about the manufacturer, layout, placement or whether it replaces another ride in the park. Hunderfossen is widely known to be a family/kiddy park, and hasn't had a single thrill ride so far (quite atmospheric, though). Still, this coaster appears to become the third biggest in Norway, after TusenFryd's ThunderCoaster and Speed Monster, barely snagging the spot from Loopen by being a whooping 90 metres longer. I doubt I'll get to ride it for some time, since it's a little out of the way and not really worth going to unless you have kids.

I'll see if I can keep you updated. Amusement parks aren't really a big thing in Norway, so it's not guaranteed that any papers will cover its construction.

Now, discuss!

If they make a coaster train look like that I think they'll have one of (if not THE) best looking and most unique coaster trains in the world.

How awesome! :D

That train is incredible, I hope they make it look just like that in realisation.

The layout looks extremely similar to Force One at Schwaben:

Edit: Just looked, it's a clone by the looks of things.

^ also the facts that Pokemaniac mentioned are kind of suggesting that it could be Zierer. I don't really believe that the whole ride could be 1:30 minutes long, considering that the other ESCs aren't even close to being longer than a minute. Anyways, sounds like some good coaster news for Norway. Apart from TusenFryd they don't really have any other serious (customly designed) coasters

That's great news!
I love it when a smaller park puts itself on the coaster-map!

That is literally Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (apart from the colour...and it probably won't fly). For those who have no idea what on Earth I'm on about, have a picture:

I thought the same, and wondered who stole from who, but some quick googling shows quite a bit of difference between the two cars, and there's almost no commonality between the movies apart from the fact that they both feature an odd looking car.

I wonder if the front will need a point of articulation due to the length, or will the wheel/axle articulation be enough...

Awesome looking car, though.

It looks similar, but I guess it's influenced by the same types of cars. I don't know exactly when Il Tempo Gigante was conveyed, but the sketches existed for some years before the movie was out:

A working model of the car exists, complete with a jet turbine ('cause there's no kill like overkill). Due to EU noise regulations, and possibly because it could have dire implications for the structural integrity of the car, the jet engine has never been used, but is believed to be able to pull 6G at the rear axle (freely translated from a magazine article I found). Even apart from the jet, the full-scale car is impressive. It is 6.7 metres long, 2.5 metres wide, and weighs 2.8 tons. Its conventional engine yields 550 horsepowers. When not touring on shows somewhere, the car is on display at Hunderfossen Familiepark.

I managed to find a YouTube clip from a car program showcasing the car, which might be interesting to those of you who understand Norwegian, but for some reason* have never seen Pinchcliffe Grand Prix:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MPM0Us-WS0

In short, it probably won't fly... but not for the lack of trying.

*A couple years after its release, Pinchcliffe Grand Prix had sold 20 % more movie tickets than there were inhabitants in Norway. In later years, the number of inhabitants is creeping up towards the ticket sales count (5.1 million people vs. 5.5 million sold movie tickets), but that's mainly because it hasn't been featured in cinema for a few years. Also given the fact that it's also the best-selling VHS in Norway, nearing the tops of the DVD and Blu-ray sales and is shown on TV every Christmas eve, a Norwegian would really be required to live under a particularly soundproof rock for four decades not to have heard about it.

I have sent an e-mail to Hunderfossen, and they can confirm that this coaster is a Zierer Custom Elevated Seating Coaster. I'm going there for the opening, may 24th.

I wonder if it will be a one or two train ride?

It will use a single train with 7 cars (as pictured) for a total of 14 passengers. An opening date of 24. May, 2014 has been announced.

Yep, there is also the possibility to upgrade later on with a second train if they need it.

Also the ride is done in terms of vertical construction.
