Alton Towers - 12th July

As you may or may not be aware, Gazza flew across from Australia last week to experience some of the UK parks.

Family_furie decided to meet up with him on his first park of the UK and asked me if I would like to come along, I accepted the offer and off I went.

It was a bit of an early start for me, but nevertheless going to Alton on a Sunday is something I don't get to experience very often due to the terribleness of Sunday trains.

Once I got to Stafford, furie literally turned the corner into the station and within minutes I was in the boot of the car and on the way to Alton!

It had just gone 10 when we arrived and we weren't meeting Gazza until half 11. So the first stop while we waited for 11:30 was to Sharkbait Reef.

There were some awesomely coloured toys I really wanted on one of the games stalls in Mutiny Bay. But there were many reasons why I didn't want to have a go on the stall!

5616_1172568711055_1133143676_527499_5312246_n.jpg

These reasons would be:
1, The game was too expensive and probably had very few duckies which would allow you to win one.
2, I would get annoyed carrying it around all day
3, It wouldn't of fit in furie's car
4, I would've looked like a right pillock on the train and bus!

So over to Sharkbait Reef we went. Bag lady took a new twist, this time I was pushchair lady. About 15 minutes elapsed while family_furie were in there and i was getting steadily more hungry with the smell of the kebabs behind me and the doughnuts.
I resisted temptation of the doughnuts as I don't like kebabs.

Once Sharkbait was done, our intention was to go to Squirrel Nutty but en route got distracted by Heave Ho in which MF took MMF on!
Me and furie then compared cameras as I have the newer version of the Canon Powershot that furie has. We then headed over to Nutty.

5616_1172568791057_1133143676_527501_2823517_n.jpg

Madame_furie went on with MMF and SSIL_furie, while furie, MF and me waited around with the pushchair.
By this time 11:30 was approaching and furie disappeared to the toilet and returned 10 minutes later with Gazza.

With the introductions over, furie took Gazza, MF and MMF onto the Beastie so that Gazza could get the credit. They suitably got beaten up by it.

5616_1172568951061_1133143676_527505_6408377_n.jpg

Not wanting to queue for Spinball, myself, furie, MF, Gazza and SSIL_furie headed to Guest Services so we could have the special access bands.
Gazza and SSIL_furie then went on Spinball.

5616_1172568991062_1133143676_527506_4926235_n.jpg

Once they had got off Spinball, we headed to Old McDonalds farm to find Madame_furie and MMF. We found them and had a look at the rabbits. They were fun!

Having already done a lot of walking backwards and forwards, we headed over to Duel via the Haunted Hollow so that MMF could get his fix!
Once Duel was over, we stopped for 15 minutes and had snacks and then headed onto the Rapids.

There is one very large dip round the back of the Pizza and Pasta buffet that now gets you and the rest of the boat soaking wet! Today was no exception. With me and Gazza in the firing line and me knowing what was coming, I moved swiftly onto the available seat and let Gazza get the full impact of it.

He did, but me and furie still got wet as were the next people in the boat to be in the firing line. Even the fountains seemed to get us wet as well.
So with a mildly moist to wet ride on the Rapids, we left and met back up with Madame_furie who was push chair watching and getting harassed by some duckies.

5616_1172569231068_1133143676_527512_6050134_n.jpg

We then split up again as MMF wanted to see the pirate show. So Madame_furie and MMF went there while we got distracted by the short queue for the Flume.

Obviously, with a Alton Towers n00b with us, we were willing to experience anything within reason. We did decide to go on the Flume and with SSIL_furie not fancing going on it in a boat of 5, we split up into a 3 and a 2.

Me, furie and Gazza had the one boat and Gazza willingly sat at the front.
I stole the back of Gazza's poncho to cover my camera bag which was useful as I didn't really want that to get wet.

The 1st and 2nd drop went without as much as a splash on me and furie and then onto the 3rd drop we went.
Since when had the flume been that wet?! Already wet from the 3rd drop, I had noticed that the showers were on so stole the back of Gazza's poncho and tried to keep a little bit more of me dry.
Not that that helped at all.

5616_1172569311070_1133143676_527514_1814987_n.jpg

Gazza wanted to experience Battle Galleons, so we suggested that he should go and fire one of the cannons. The rest of us apart from MF stayed well clear.

We then caught the Sky Ride over to Ugly Land to meet back up with Madame_furie and MMF so they could do Hex.
But not before a quick stop at Burger King.

5616_1172569471074_1133143676_527518_116577_n.jpg

And over the SW6 site we went.

5616_1172569591077_1133143676_527521_4095123_n.jpg

After Burger King, we met back up with Madame_furie and MMF and then headed for Hex. I was willingly push chair lady while they went on Hex.
MF didn't fancy Hex and instead wanted a go on the trampolines.

This was amusing to watch with the kids who were behind MF, they were like 'I'm sick on trampolines, I can do back flips innit'. They however, couldn't and it was very amusing to watch.
MF, however, could.

5616_1172569911085_1133143676_527528_6439408_n.jpg

Once MF had had his 5 minutes on them, we then headed over to the exit of Hex and sat on the wall and waited. Thankfully, it was only 1 ride we had to wait.

Myself, Gazza and SSIL_furie wanted to go on Rita, so we cut a 40 odd minute queue by using the access bands and went on through the exit.
This was a fun ride and I still really like Rita. The true scale of the hole on the SW6 can be seen from it!

5616_1172569991087_1133143676_527530_5154109_n.jpg

Once we went on Rita, we faffed a while while we waited for Gazza to buy the ORP, so I took yet another photo of Rita.

5616_1172570031088_1133143676_527531_6887599_n.jpg

It had actually warmed up quite a lot by now as we headed for a go on Blivian. The walk around the entire queue line was longer than what we had to wait to go on it!
The queue was just outside the station and soon enough we were on it and preparing for an ORP.

5616_1172570111090_1133143676_527533_159572_n.jpg

5616_1172570351096_1133143676_527539_5764472_n.jpg

We then faffed again in the shop while Gazza brought the ORP and I discovered a Oblivion t-shirt that I really liked.
It was originally £13 but reduced to £6.50 and with AP discount only came to £5.20.
I was rather happy. =]

We then rode again as the queue was still tiny. Still as good as always even with the fat boy faff we had to sit through.

We then left X-Sector and headed over to Forbidden Valley via the Gardens. We only queued around 10 minutes for it as the end of the queue was just by where you get hairtime when the train goes in the loop.

Gazza was still taking photos of his first UK park while we were in the short queue.

We then headed to Air via the exit of the ride as Air's queue is always usually ridiculous. Furie and MF were bag ladies and took a photo of us while going up the lift.

Air was fun as usual and we noticed that even Air didn't have a queue! It was on the bridge over the station and that was about as far as it went!

Once we had been on Air, we headed all the way back to the top of the park where we waited around half an hour to get Gazza's AP processed. The machine was experiencing problems.

As soon as we had finished there, we went to the monorail where some chav goon and locked the part of the queue off at the base which meant we had to climb over it.

We then went over to the waterpark where we would meet Madame_furie and MMF. Furie took Gazza for a walk over the bridge in the water park and it had literally just closed.

We then headed back up to the lobby, where we found Madame_furie and MF waiting for us.
Gazza filled in a customer review thingy saying it should be open longer than 6pm.

We then bid farewell to Gazza at the car as he headed back to the park to get some grub.
And that was it!

Great day and was great to meet someone new! Gazza seemed to really enjoy Alton as well, so I hope he did enjoy the other parks he visited.

Good to see you enjoyed your day at Alton. And I haven't seen sun there for quite a while! so that was good.

I hope Gazza writes a gleaming review :p

Alton Towers 23rd July

I live about 2 hours away from Alton Towers, and so all my family had to get up and out by 7am. We had a family ticket which we had pre booked online which has a feature called Early Ride Time, which proved very useful. We entered the park at 9am and, even though it wasn't open yet, went straight to Air in Forbidden Valley. When we got to Air, we queued up for a while, listening to the music and looking at what we would be experiencing minutes later. I am not a very big roller coaster enthusiast (my only other previous roller coaster experiences were on the Grand National and Steeplechase at Blackpool and the Cyclone at the old Pleasureland Southport), but having read several reviews of Air describing it as "enjoyable" and "good for first timers", I decided that I would ride it. When we got on the ride I was very nervous and excited, but the ride just blew my mind! Neither me nor my younger sister (who's got the same ammount of intensity tolerance as me) could describe it in words. Next, we had a little wander around the valley, where my Dad went on Nemesis and Ripsaw. Next, we headed out towards Gloomy Wood, where me and my Mum (who enjoys the dark rides and less thrilling ones) went on Duel: the Haunted House Strikes Back. Duel is a clever ride idea really, the entire ride is a ghost train, but you are given laser blasters to shoot the ghosts with and get a score. Afterwards, me and my Mum went through Haunted Hollow, a spooky walk that serves as a shortcut to Mutiny Bay. My little sister doesn't like ghosts much, so she and my Dad arranged to meet us in Katanga Canyon later. After the walk, we arrived in Mutiny Bay, a pirate themed area around a lake with a huge courtyard and lots of stalls and games. We headed off to Katanga Canyon where we met the others who'd been on the Congo River Rapids. We all went on the river rapids, which had a clever loading system to avoid long queues. After an enjoyable time on the River Rapids, we all went on the Runaway Mine Train which is a small mine train style roller coaster for kids. So far, we had enjoyed our morning thoroughly, and so decided to have lunch in the Mutiny Bay courtyard. After we had finished our packed lunch, we headed over to X Sector, where my Dad went on Oblivion, the world's first vertical drop roller coaster. There were very little queues on Oblivion, even though it is such a popular ride, so my Dad came off quite quickly. He said it was utterly terrifying to look down at the top, but after the first bit of the drop it was great! Then we headed off to the Towers were me and my Mum went on Hex, a dark ride based around Charles Talbot, a previous owner of Alton Towers. Half an hour later, we came off to find my Dad and my little Sister in Cloud Cuckoo Land. We went on the Twirling Toadstool which was fun, and then Charlie and the Chocolate factory which, despite the queue, was clever and fun. We walked through Ug Land, home to Rita, Queen of Speed, a launched coaster that, unfortunately for my Dad, had huge queues. After a short walk through Ug Land and the Gardens, we re-arrived in Forbidden Valley where we were determined to ride Air again (the on ride photo didn't work first time around, and we enjoyed it so much we just had to go again!). As it was later in the day, Air had a big queue but we got on about 30 minutes later. Knowing what was ahead, we let go this time (as so many people advise you to do) and my sister was constantly screaming with delight "I'm flying! I'm flying!" We got our photo, bought some gifts and got an ice cream. Next, we visited the Flume which had a 15 minute queue. The Flume at Alton Towers is the best log flume I've ever been on! It has 3 drops (one of which is in pitch blackness) and we all enjoyed it thoroughly. Finally, we went on the Battle Galleons in Mutiny Bay. Another clever ride, the Battle Galleons are boats that travel along a set track with water cannons mounted to the sides so you can spray the onlookers! Unfortunately, the public can spray back! This was our last ride at Alton Towers, so afterwards we walked back to our car and drove home.

Having just seen those photos, I have a feeling that I sat next to Gazza on Inferno the other day, I just didn't know it was him.

Win, I don't have to start a topic.
I'm back in Australia now, so with access to a proper computer and my photos I can start to do these TRs...Hopefully you'll find an 'outsiders' opinions interesting....I was certainly suprised at how some things at all the parks were very different to how people say they are.

Anyway, when I was planning this trip Furie was a big help, and offered to meet up with me on the Sunday...I asked if there were any other CFers nearby who he could talk into coming (I don't really know anybody that well) He said Rach would probably come so thats how we ended up with the turnout.

Anyway, the day was a ton of fun, it was great to have people who knew the place showing me around and to muck about with.

Overall, I was really Impressed by Alton Towers, and it is up there with the best parks I have been too. The place seemed top notch in every aspect...Quality of rides, upkeep, operations, F&B pricing and quality, theming. I also found the place very picturesque. Brisbane is a very leafy city, but the UK was something else with how green everything is, with plants growing everywhere.

Anyway, onto the day.

My body clock was still mucked up, so I rose at 5am and went for a walk down the country lanes near the park (I stayed at the Trough Ivy house B&B...would recommend)
It's crazy, if it werent for that LED sign at the gates you wouldn't think the biggest park in the UK was hiding there.

Fast foward to 9am and I turned up for ERT and hit Rita first.
Overall a pretty good ride (I like Accelerators) but I still have Superman Escape as my favourite. I just sort of felt a park like Alton could have done a lot more than a simple figure 8....they do have a height limit, but those trees are tall so they could have still done something a bit more elaborate with lots of hills.

After a few goes on Rita next was Oblivion. I really liked this one (I like freefalling things)...the theming was pretty cool (Though a bit worn in parts) and the operations were really impressived (I liked that idea of doing four rows for each train and alternating)
However, I didn't really rate it against Sheikra...Didn't do as much, the drop lacked that intense moment of ejector, and the hole was ok, but not this amazing psychological device people make it out to be. It was dark for a second and you got mist in your eyes...reminded me of Jet Rescues tunnel. Excellent re ride value though.

After a couple of goes on Oblivion I started the trek to Forbidden Valley, having a quick wander through Sea Life and a go on RMT on the way (Fun little ride, my first full sized powered coaster...I liked touches like the bell, and the ops: "Choo Choooooo".

So finally I was up to Nemesis, a coaster I had been wanting to ride for years. Approaching it it looks quite interesting, this post apocalyptic thing, but surrounded by european flowers and trees...bit of a contrast
Got a front row seat....off the first drop, this isnt so bad, down the straight, ooh going faster now, through the corkscrew, whoohoo, into the helix, woahhhhh this is bloody fast, into the zero g, whoohooo, into the rest of the layout, shiiiiiiit slooooow down! I did a re-ride in some mid train seat.
Overall, really awesome, but i wasn't quite sure what to make of it...compared to the other B&M inverts, it wasn't the revelation i was expecting....that did change later on though.

So I moved over to Air…..Wasn’t expecting much:
-Everyone seems to dislike it,
-I’d ridden Tatsu (Which I loved, and I thought this looked so much less)
-Looks Slow in POVs
-Seemed to have a simplistic layout.

But I was really surprised and thought it was fantastic. I rode in the back row, and it does actually keep its pace well, its always ‘doing stuff’ throughout the layout, the lie down section had the right amount of force, and the landscaping (again) was very nice. Of course, its no Tatsu, but it was not that far behind actually.

I did a poncho ride on Ripsaw, which was fun (I like top spins, but we don’t have one here, only the independent swivelling arm type)

By now it was time to meet The Furies and Rach.
I met up with Furie at the spitting frogs, and after a short faff I met the rest of the gand who had just been on Squirrel Nutty. I was in the area so I collected another “Unique Layout” and rode beastie….Ok for a kids ride I guess.

Now I hope I have have the day in the right order.
We wandered out of the farmyard area, looking at some rabbits and “doox” along the way, and made our way over to Katanga Canyon.

Me and SSIL_Furie went for a ride on Spinball, I came away a bit disappointed though because it didn’t seem to spin much (It wasn’t till my day at Chessington when that chemical leak happened that I got proper spinning rides on this coaster type). The layout is fun and twisty though. I got a photo pass, but they have reduced it from 5 to 4 photos…Bastards!

Next we had a go at Duel…It has some quite nice effects, but as is typical with these rides the laser guns are a distraction so you miss them. One thing that was memorable was this bit where bats flew overhead.
On my first go I managed to get the highest score of us all …25000 or something, how is that in the scheme of things.

After a snack faff in Gloomy Wood We had a go at the Rapids….Nice looking, and the turntable loading speeds things up (The Rapids at Dreamworld haven’t had the turntable for years, and the boat is just held by gates)…They were probably the driest rapids I have been on, bar the one wave that I copped (Personal policy of mine not to wear ponchos on rapids…takes the Russian roulette out of it)

Next we headed over to the flume, seeing more ‘doox’ along the way which rach photographed, after a short wait where we discussed the concept of a goon we were on. The queue music sounds like 70s porno music or something,
and theming actually seems less tacky in real life though. The flume is a bit different to the ones here, since there is this lengthy elevated section where it zig-zags. The Rubber Duck that pops out in the tunnel seems weird…is it there to scare kids?

I had the poncho on for this one, and it worked for 95% of the ride, but Furie ripped it off at the right moment and I copped the shower….I’ll pay that one.

Next I think we wandered through mutiny bay, I had a quick go at the water guns at Battle Galleons but retreated very quickly. In videos they look like a piddling flow of water, but they aren’t!

We got on the Skyride, I lolled at the ‘iPod’ warning signs (Link Furie?)

We got over to the back corner of the park, and I went to Hungry Jacks Burger King for lunch since I hadn’t brought anything and got this Angus burger which was quite good.

Next, Rach, SSIL_Furie and I had another go on ‘Ritard’….Rach said about it hurting, but its only the first turn, and I managed to avoid anything painful.

We found ourselves at the
Maxi_Minor_Furie wanted to go on the Bungee Trampolines, Rach stayed with him and Furie showed me Hex (I had temporarily forgotten about that ride, but I suddenly got excited remembering it was one of the things I was looking forward to about Alton)
With Minor, Madam and SSIL_Furie I went in. I’m a sucker for themed attractions, and this did not dissapoint, nice theming and an interesting preshow.

The ride was excellent and really convincing, and the music was the icing on the cake.
In particular, one thing that took me by surprise was the ‘exploding brain effect’ as I called it right at the start of the ride. It worked so well, everything looks normal, but your head feels funny, like something paranormal is happening.

By now I think everyone was itching for some big coasters, Madam and Minor Furie broke off to the water park, and the rest of us headed for Oblivion, heading through the towers and discovering an awful secret about them,
With a minimal wait we were on Oblivion. I quickly stratergised the ORP (Which turned out very well…The British absurd ORP was one part of the UK theme park experience I wanted to try.)

We did a re-ride and set off for forbidden valley,
Nemesis had a short wait, so we went for that…Furie directed me to sit in the back right seat. So as we reached the top of the lift Furie pulled out an inflatable frog thing…I had seen it earlier in the day and thought it was one of Minor_Furies toys…I prompty started pissing myself laughing down the first drop…from there furie got it Inflated by some superhuman lung strength in the helix, meanwhile I was being pinned down by the most intense ride of my life. Back right is indeed the money seat, and it was that ride that catapulted it to my #1 spot (Dethroning DD Ice) and on most subsequent rides that was where I went to.

Furie didn’t want to do Air, so Rach and SSIL_Furie went on….It was still good, and I wondered why nobody likes it. I thought it would be funny to flap up the lift hill.

I think we may or may not have done some Nemesis rerides, but it was getting late and Furie and Madam_Furie still had to meet up. We got my Merlin pass processed (Longest wait of the day) and we hopped on the Monorail (I wanted to have a squiz at the water park)

With everyone all met up again, we walked to the car and I said my farewells.
Awesome day overall.

I think the only thing I can find fault with is that the water park is not open after the park. I bet a huge portion of guests would love to sit in the spa or float for a bit after walking all day, but the opportunity is just not there. Here in Summer the water parks are open till after sunset, and after 4pm rates are available, so people who have been at the dry parks in the day end up migrating to the water parks for the evening.
Big missed opportunity for them.

This is probably enough out of me…on to the disorganised mish mash of photos.

Sorry I don't have that many photos as yet (I took about 8GB worth) so I still have a bit to sort through.

Edit: I think I might have gotten MF and MMF mixed up....I've written as if MMF is the eldest.

Gazza, you did get the kids mixed up, but nobody noticed

As I said earlier, had a superb day. Brilliant write ups by Rach and Gazza pretty much summing it up.

I didn't take many pictures, and none of scary_furie :p
