NedGer 2015: Day 3 - Efteling Fairytales

This year hasn't been too filled with coasters for me for the first 8 months of it. The only place with coasters I'd visited was the local fair, of which I've also written a short trip report. With that in mind I was crazy excited for a 13 day trip I scheduled myself for the 2nd part of September, during which I've spent 2 nights in Koblenz and rest of the days at Thom place in Nieuwegein, just outside of Utrecht (thanks so much for letting me stay, Thom!). During the trip I've visited most of the major theme parks in The Netherlands (at least those I haven't visited before) and also a couple of them in Germany and added 50 new creds to my count.

Day 0: Travel faff (September 15th)

I did the whole of the trip with help of Interrail's Global Pass option, thus significantly reducing the travel costs. The 15 day option was even on some sort of a discount, so I got it for only 270€ or so, which is about as much as a return plane ticket would cost to get myself to either Frankfurt or Amsterdam from Ljubljana.

I got the early train from Ljubljana to Villach, where I switched trains to the one that would take me directly to my overnight destination in Koblenz. Had it all gone according to plans, I'd arrive to Koblenz at about 6pm, which would allow myself to visit Pützchens Markt fairground in Bonn, which was about an hour travel from my booked accommodation.

But it obviously didn't... My train was stopped in Salzburg (the last station before the border crossing) and the information on the speakers went that this the last stop and the train won't continue its way to Germany, due to the Syrian immigrant crisis. I guess it would be just too hard to properly check the whole of the train before letting it continue to Germany. I panicked a bit, but it all went away when I stumbled upon a trio I'd seen when I was getting off the train. It turned out they were in the same sort of distress as I was. They seemed like quite a random bunch, which soon turned out to be true, since the older guy was some sort of a university professor from Germany and the younger two were a pair of British tourist on their trip around Europe. The German got some info on how to cross the border with public transport buses and then get on a train on the first station across the border. We did that and we got ourselves to Munich, where I'd say goodbye to my fellow travellers and continue my way on ICE train to Koblenz. I arrived to Koblenz at around 9pm, which meant it would be far too risky to try and get the fairground creds in Bonn, so I went for a well-deserved sleep instead.

Police at the station in Germany. Excuse my finger

Day 1: Spite, Koblenz and finally, a cred

The initial plan was to visit Phantasialand with Thom and continue my way to Utrecht in the evening, but it so happened that it turned out to be the day of his Grandpa's funeral (my condolences again, Thom), so we moved our Phantasia plan for a day and I got an additional day of doing stuff in Germany. I checked for any nearby parks and found Wild- und Freizeitpark Klotten not being too far to get to from Koblenz (only a good half an hour with train, plus some uphill walking).

When I arrived to Cochem it was raining. Nothing heavy, just a light drizzle and I made my way to the chairlift, which was about a 10 min walk from the station. The guy at the ticket counter said that the theme park was probably closed. Then I made a stupid decision of not buying the ticket and deciding to walk the hill myself. The path to the upper station was quite narrow and steep, but then there was a rather wide public road leading from there on to the park.

Covered in a mixture of sweat and rain, I finally got here.

21592682908_34a74d93df_c.jpg

The place seemed open and there was a lady at the counter. I asked her whether they are open today and she told me yes, but that animals are sleeping or hiding or whatever she tried to gesticulate me with her poor English. Nevermind the animals, are the rides open. Then she started showing me the park map and repeating that the place is open, just that I probably can't see no animals. I pointed to the part with creds and asked whether this is open. She finally managed to tell me it is closed and that they don't plan to open any of the rides today. Then I asked her how much they want to just let me in, hoping I'd perhaps be let in for free to take some pictures and got an answer I'd have to pay the full entrance free, since they have some caged animals in there and that's obviously worth the 16€ entrance price. **** this **** place! And the thing that pissed me off the most was that the light drizzle that has caused them to close the whole park has started to taper off by the time I excited the entrance building.

**** off Klotten, especially since you can't obviously be bothered to put the info of closing the rides in event of inclement weather on your **** website.
Park rank: -1/10

Couple of spites. </3

Not a great start of the trip...

Some had it worse than I did.

Deeply angered by the turn of events, which have still left me park-less for the year, I got my ass back to the hotel and checked on coast2coaster if there are any other small theme parks with creds nearby for me to get. I've found some place to which I'll get back later.

By now, the rain has more or less stopped, so I got some sushi at a nearby Japanese restaurant and then made my way around Koblenz. It such a nice city, that I knew so little about beforehand. It instantly jumped to near the top of the list of my favorite cities, despite the weather still being rather grim. Some photos:

This monument is kind of a symbol of the unison of German states, hence all the flags. I find it quite neat they've put it on a confluence of the two rivers.

Then there was some sort of a fortress on a hill on the other side of the river that could be accessed via a cableway. It being only 7€ for students, I simply had to do it. The cashier who was selling the tickets asked me whether I'm from Slovenia after checking my student ID card and it turned out she was Serbian. She was extra nice and probably even more so when she realized she'd found a tourist that understood her if she spoke in her native language. :D

Then I got back to the hotel and continued my way to the aforementioned +1 place, which was a 10min train ride, followed by a 20 min walk away.

21753952256_4d5796bb31_c.jpg

Can you guess where was I headed?

The place is called Trampolino Familien- und Freizeitpark and is a small Indoor FEC.

When I got to the cashdesk, the lady who runs the place told me she can't let me in, since they are closing in one hour's time. I argued a bit and said I'd be in and out in 10 minutes. She gave me a confused look and asked what will I do in 10 minutes and I answered I'll only get the cred and get out. She yelled to her colleague, whether the cred was open and after she got a confirming nod, she'd let me in for free! Yay!

So, this was the cred, called Ring Renner:

The place has quite a lot packed in a small place, including 2 other rcdb listings, which were: this little spite...

21753900186_436bf99682_c.jpg

21768308082_fbc2997700_c.jpg

...and the pseudo Butterfly cred (see, the parks don't acknowledge them as coasters!)

21592170808_1f2ef6fbee_c.jpg

The outside bit (which was closed today) used to include a much more substantial coaster in the form of abc rides tube coaster. Riding the only remaining one a couple of days later made me really sad this place got rid of theirs.

21789535131_56bde92cfe_c.jpg

That was more or less it for day 1. I got in for an early sleep in preparation for what became a day in my new favorite park, Phantasialand.

Stay tuned! ;)

Day 2 - Phantasialand

Visiting Phantasialand avec Thom was one of the vital points in planning this trip. With Thom's Uni courses already starting with September, he was only free Wednesdays and Fridays and with that in mind we originally planned to visit Phantasia on Wednesday. But that then turned out to be the date of his Grandpa's funeral (my condolences again, Thom), so we've made a swift alternation to visiting the park on Thursday with Thom missing a day of Uni (if any of Thom's Uni friends is reading this, he was actually on the funeral that Thursday ;) ).

The earliest Thom could get to Brühl was 10:40, so that gave me some time to catch a few additional zzzs before waking up. What I didn't bear in mind is that it would still take me almost an hour to get to Cologne station, where I'd leave the bags and get back to Brühl. Oops. Luckily I managed to catch the train Thom was taking and got myself to Brühl in time.

After a quick bus ride we got there!

21812003736_348f97da31_c.jpg

What struck me as weird is that Phantasialand has no actual entrance building. It is just a gate next to the road, through which you enter the park. Nothing to really catch the eye, if I'm honest. But then the magic starts...

21215362514_85e283e9d8_c.jpg

Following Thom's advice, the first thing we did was Winjas.

21847705951_7bcd9e25e0_c.jpg

The inside of the building was one of the few theme park moments that actually had me saying Wow when I've first seen it. It is just so surreal.

21650071780_dccf5dcb18_c.jpg

No photos do it justice.

We did the Fear side first and I didn't enjoy it as much, since I managed to forget my phone in my pocket and the restrain ended up pushing right on it, resulting in hurting my leg throughout the ride. It was probably this that made me enjoy Force a bit more initially, but after re-riding both sides later in the day it was clear Fear was better in every aspect, not least due to having a longer part in the dark. The coaster itself is fun throughout and all of its random elements made me enjoy it more than I should have. 7,5/10

Then we walked to the other end of the park, passing this:

To ride this:

21216971653_78a349da3c_c.jpg

We queued for the back row, since that's supposedly where this coaster is the best at. It was a fun ride, certainly my favorite Vekoma Mine Train (the only other I've done was Mammut in Gardaland, which was poor), but no near good as I hoped it would be, considering all the hype. I expected air time and all I got was being thrown around the rather uncomfortable seat. I'm not exactly sure what it is that makes people rave so much about it... 5,5/10

Thom didn't let me ride Black Mamba just yet, so we went for the other ride I was most looking forward to riding - Chiapas.

21811921336_21f0a5a5a3_c.jpg

21215271144_932e55ebce_c.jpg

It was pure joy! All the artificial rockwork, extended themeing, actual village on the side of it, the random disco part, airtime hump on the bottom of the last drop... Just everything about it was just perfect! The only thing I disliked about it were the annoying restrains, ugh. When getting back to the station, our boat managed to create a wave that got the kid in a boat in front of us completely soaked. He got rather angry and I couldn't help but laugh. 9,5/10

Oh and have I mentioned everything, including Chiapas, was a complete walk-on? Perks of visiting on a school day off-season. I only wish all the nation were as good with sending kids to school as Germans (looking at you Dutchies, but I'll get to that later on.

21811906966_3d22707a9e_c.jpg

Next thing we did was Mystery Tower. It was set on short programme, but still ended up being really fun, better than its Disney counterpart (at least the one in Paris). And I think it's also he only Intamin Bungee Drop in existence. Shame that they haven't made more, since they are way better than the regular ones. I doubt they would be as fun outside the building, but nevertheless, one can always hope. 8/10

21650153368_d33c5a81b4_c.jpg

21215238064_1893a97921_c.jpg

And then River Quest happened... And we got soaked, thoroughly drenched. Already the first drop out of the elevator lift got us soaked and water just kept on coming with every drop that was to come. The couple that got seated with us just looked around in disbelief as to what the **** has just happened. I think the only person in the raft that expected to get that wet was Thom and he too, looked rather surprised by how wet we've actually gotten. I like water rides to get me wet, but not soaked, so it wasn't exactly my cup of tea, really, especially not since I didn't have no clothes and shoes to change... 5/10

21826147002_9a1b442abd_c.jpg

We did Geister Rikscha next. It was old, random and crappy not even significant enough to take a picture of...

Talocan was more picturesque, though. Sadly we got the side facing a wall, so it wasn't as good as it could be. We wanted to re-ride it later in the day, but it closed down a few hours before the park did... 7/10

21837976285_bd9045b21f_c.jpg

After Talocan we went for a quick bite in the shape of Currywürst. It was the first time I tried one and I think it was quite good.

Then we did this dated boat ride. I did like the initial drop but after that it got quite boring. What in the world do a Karst Cave and King Kong have in common? This ride

Right next doors is Temple of The Night Hawk. Uneventful indoor coaster with 3 lift hills with the ride taken in complete darkness. 5/10

21811780446_6a84c25095_c.jpg

Crappy station photo

Next we did the Splash Battle thing. We were the only one on it and it was extremely boring. It had some targets to shoot at, but nothing happened if you hit them.

I wonder how it is living in one of those houses that overlook the park.

21216814933_e4399a17ac_c.jpg

We grabbed a re-ride on Winjas Fear while there and then a quick ride on the thoroughly unthemed simulator. Seeing such a dated ride in a park like Phantasialand was quite weird and I have a feeling it is going to be a ride that will get cut off fairly soon.

A much better ride was closeby in the shape of Maus Au Chocolat. It is an awesomely themed shooter and I think the name gives out the subjects you are shooting at. What caught me by a bit of a surprise is that you don't shoot at the light targets, but rather at 5 or so individual screens between which the car/train moves.

21215087584_73acb096a3_c.jpg

Next up was Hotel Tartüff, which immediately jumped to my n°1 spot when it comes to Fun Houses. I loved its theming.

21847418941_1ff6e904ec_c.jpg

And then it was time for what was probably the most anticipated coaster of the whole trip - Black Mamba. And I have to say it lived up to the expectations. When it comes to B&M Inverts, I've basically split them into 2 rankings. Super good ones, that deserve their entry into the top 10 (Katun, Nemesis) and the mediocre ones, that don't do much worthwhile stuff (Nemesis Inferno, also Batman). I'm glad to report this one qualifies into the former. First drop perhaps isn't as good as on Katun, but the rest of the layout is just amazing. It keeps its pace throughout the course, no sluggish parts, no pace-killing MCBRs, nothing. I figured out the Zero-G-Roll was quite fantastic if you push the restrain up a bit on the first loop. You really get that floating feeling in there. What has to be said, the coaster is a front rower and we've found our first ride in front row to be much better than our ride straight after in the back row. 9/10

21811545466_d253748894_c.jpg

Just how empty the place was

We've also ticked off the mad house. No long incomprehensible talking in a language I don't understand, just a long pre-show video, which still managed to make the thing fairly boring.

To finish the day off we've grabbed a re-ride on Colorado (which was still fairly tame), Chiapas (which was still awesome), two re-rides on Black Mamba (which were a walk-on and awesome) and went back for Thom's bag in Wuze Town. We were early enough to still catch Winjas in operation, so we re-rode Force side once again. Since there was no queue for it, the operator let us re-ride it straight on without leaving the train. A great way to finish the day!

So that was it for Phantasialand. A fantastic park with otherworldly themeing and some great rides. I really can't wait for Taron to open, since I believe it would fully complement the great ride selection they already have. 10/10

On our way back to Utrecht (actually forth in my case), we've made a stop to see a bit of Cologne and grab a quick bite in McDonalds.

Glad you loved Phantasialand, shame you didn't like Colorado adventure, not sure why you expected air time on it though? It's all about the speed and crazy banking.

Getting a re-ride without getting off is always a great way to end the day. Glad you got a brief Koln visit in too, such a fab city.

Shame about that first Park being spiteful. What a silly place.

^ I always find that I get thrown out of my seat on Colorado's drops in the back. Maybe not the same kind of airtime that you get in a B&M hyper or an Intamin, but it certainly throws you around in a good way.

Awesome report. It was an awesome day indeed, and absolutely dead. I still love River Quest though, it's so unique and insane <3

Oh, Thom has described it a bit differently, that's why. I guess I went in with my expectations being a bit off, which resulted in my disappointment. Oops. (EDIT: he beat me to it).

We've only spent an hour or so around the Cathedral, so I haven't seen much of it. I'm back in the area in some 3 weeks from today (perhaps also for winter Phantasialand), so I hope I'll have more time to see it then. Any recommendations of what not to miss? :)

Agreed. I think if it was in summer, they'd be open regardless the grim weather, but I guess they gave their staff a day off when they looked at the weather forecast, which was quite a lot worse than it then turned out to be. There was some occasional drizzle but no heavy rain till the evening set in...

Ooh, if you get time to explore. Do just that. There's a crazy pub full of animatronics which is so unique and awesome. The chocolate museum is also really interesting (also free lindt). The cathedral interior is amazing too. There's a whole bunch of lovely buildings and that all quite close to that main area so just go for a wander, you may even find things I didn't. Message me if you want more details.

Day 3: Efteling

Due to a long Thursday we overslept a bit and then our train to S'Hertogenbosch was also running a bit late, so we missed our bus to the park. With a tad more than 20 minutes to spare we went for a short stroll towards the city.

Thom went to the info board, where he got me a discounted pass for 18€ (half the normal price) with his season pass. It turned out he gets 2 discounted tickets, so he took it and gave (re-sold) it to me for my second day on Monday.

22366646931_2bf6300753_c.jpg

Lake is the first thing you see when you walk through the doors.

Thom said we should do Droomvlucht first, since that's the way he usually starts the day. On our way there we went into some restaurant, since Thom said I should see how amazing it actually is. We made a lap around that self service place and gone out quick afterwards (it was too dark to take pictures).

Passed by this fancy carousel on the way.

DroomEntrance

Droomvlucht was actually really good for a dark ride. I have to state I'm not the biggest fan of those, but it was a positive surprise. I didn't know it was multi storey ride and the downhill spiral made me smile. It almost felt like a coaster. :) 8/10

Next ride we did was Villa Volta next doors.

21733258654_b0e9249d7e_c.jpg

It's a Vekoma Mad House and I've never been a fan of those. I guess it was alright. I've done a fair few of those now, but the problem for me has always been me not understanding what the story is all about (the only one I really liked was Hex, mostly because I could understand their narration). As always, I quickly got bored and started checking train schedule for one of the latter days in my trip.

Next up was the first cred of the day - Vogel Rok! You enter through this giant bird's crotch.

21734949023_5867a0951e_c.jpg

And you get strapped in for a fun little ride. It was really good for a 30+ years old Vekoma, certainly better than the ride we did the previous day (Temple of the Nighthawk). 6,5/10

22168332678_5d00bc9bb2_c.jpg

Pardon the crappy quality.

We then walked our way to the other end of the park where the park's rapids, Piraña, is located. On our way there I shot some sunshine laden photos of the park.

It was there we ate a sausage I believe (it wasn't a Hotdog, tbh, just bread, sausage and some weird kind of mustard).

Pirana was rather good. Not nearly as wet as River Quest, but nevertheless still fun. Good for the first rapids in Europe at least. 6,5/10

Right next door is Bob. Bob was Thom's first. He said he doesn't ride Bob as often nowadays since Bob doesn't provide such a thrilling experience and that he prefers Joris (George) way more these days. Poor Bob!

This is Bob:

Nah, Bob is actually an Intamin Bobsled coaster. The only one to be built outside the states. It's a fun ride, but with too many pace-killing moments for my liking. 5,5/10

Next up was Fata Morgana. I think the story behind it follows the 1001 Nights plot. Fun little dark ride, but nothing more than that. I liked the station, though.

Warning: shoots down planes

We walked round a bit and found a bridge for which Thom was sure was closed for years. It was open! And was providing some good photo ops.

We did Baron 1898, the new ride next. A bit of front row queueing later and we were aboard. It's a really fun coaster. While the first drop is probably the weakest of the 3 dive coasters I've done, the rest of the layout is pure joy. A bit of an airtime on the hills and some nice Zero-G feeling in the second inversion finished off with a decently forceful helix. Paired with an interesting pre-show (which I'm glad to see was also translated into English) it makes it my favourite of the 3 B&M Dive coasters I've done (Sheikra and Oblivion being the other 2). 8,5/10

Next up was Python. Old Vekoma looper, first major ride to exist in the park and fairly fine for a 35 year old loopscrew. New trains make a difference, I guess. 5/10

Then it was time for Joris. We did the back row of the Water side first. It was real good fun. The hills that follow the lifthill turnaround provide some airtime, but the real highlight of the ride for me was the twisted section that followed next. While really good on the Water side, it proved to be just excellent on the Fire part. And I love the extra touch of the Dragon spitting fire and splashing water. Just an excellent ride, which jumped to my n°1 spot in my wooden coaster ranks. 9/10

Before doing the Vuur (Fire) side we got a lap on Vliegende Hollander. It's an great dark ride with a decent coaster section finished up with a not-too-wet splashdown. The themeing of the ride is fab, while the cars (boats) aren't really. With 3 across seating in every second row of the boat a lot of seats are left empty, thus significantly reducing the throughput. It would need a SRQ, but I can't see a way of adding it in the fab station. 7/10 (8,5 for dark ride, 5,5 for the coaster part).

After ticking off the other (better) side of Joris it soon started raining and we've found our shelter in Polle's Keuken, the place with top-notch pancakes.

We didn't ride anything else that day, but rather spent the remaining hour and a half or so in the Sprookjesbos. The name translates to Fairytale Forest in Dutch and it was where it has all started back in the 1950s. There are loads of animatronics from the famous fairytales, most of which I had known (Dancing shoes, Emperor's New Clothes, etc.). Sadly most of what they were saying was in Dutch so I couldn't really connect myself with the story like Thom did. Eh...

Before leaving we made a quick stop in Diorama, which is a large hall with some sort of a fairytale land set up in the middle.

One last attraction we did was Spookslot. I thought it was some sort of haunted house dark ride, so you can imagine my disappointment upon finding out it's just a weird sort of a puppet show. Dated attraction, not really what to expect from an elaborately themed façade...

22343812802_88f240caf8_c.jpg

So, that was Efteling. It's a nice little park to spend your day in, but it didn't really meet my expectations. I guess I do find it a bit over-hyped, since I believe I'd find it much more enjoyable in the times before I became a regular on coasterforce, hearing stories about how awesome the park is, how almost everybody has it as their number 1 park, etc. While I could see why Dutch people (like Thom) like it (it is such a Dutch park), I couldn't really get what is there that would be so amazing for a foreigner. Coasters are thrown in one part, dark rides in the other, then there is Sprookjesbos, which was more or less just a quick walkthrough for me, since I don't know Dutch. I agree it's pretty and relaxing to walk around (when screaming kids aren't constantly running around you), but... I don't think I'd have to visit a theme park to enjoy that (looks at the window). Don't get me wrong, it still an enjoyable park. Not when it's packed, though... 8/10
