What's new

Dubai City / Dubai Land Chopper Photo Shoot

Jake

Strata Poster
Just came across these, and thought people might find what's happening in the UAE interesting :p

It's all so new and shiny that it almost looks fake...

These must be pretty recent too, as the Burj Dubai (the tallest building in the world) looks nearly done...

BTW, if you click the drop down, you can select 'dubai land' and see whats happening there. No theme park stuff, but you can see the stadiums and stuff...

I can't wait until the buildings start cracking due to poor construction methods. Oh and one fairly large earthquake and you can say goodbye to the Palm Islands. :)

It looks pretty amazing, and although the Middle East isn't really my prime vacation destination, it's somewhere I hope I get to go, at least one day.

And I don't get how the Palm Islands could sink.. I've watched so many shows on it, and the planning was so meticulous that I couldn't see them not planning for rising water levels.

It does look almost fake its all that new. I'd love to go, its anyone's guess whether the money out there is going to last now though. Not sure how up to date it is either, because if you go on the Abu Dhabi tab, they're still constructing the Yas Marina circuit, and the Ferrari Experience is a lot further on than shown.

Well sing that the copyright is dated 2008, then these pictures are a bit old, Burj Dubai is more or less complete now.

The first line of the Dubai Metro (the city's rapid transit system) opened recently, and the stations look <img> amazing!

You know that the second image is the Stockholm Metro, right??

Still these are really great images, I just hope that they haven't blown all the money they have yet :)

It does look so surreal and sort of eerie, being so empty. I wouldn't want to say this, but as I said over 2 years ago? I still doubt Dubai will be such a success, fill the all five star hotels, somehow just it doesn't all add up.
The finance has had it's fair share of problems recently, couldn't find a better article right now, sure it's "ok" now, but hmm...http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/nov/29/dubai-uae-central-bank-guarantee Also it needs to be said that I really am fascinated yet a bit scared in a way of what their building and creating over there and it would be amazing to see how it all looks like when/if it is finished.

Does the Stockholm Metro have escalators labelled "Up" and "Not up"? The furthest one must mean "standing still", then.

And as for Dubai lacking money: We're hitting a transport revolution this century. Bullet trains and "faster-than-bullet"-trains can bring huge amounts of goods over huge distances in little time.
Africa is getting an economic boost. If they decide to group the entire continent to one huge country (just that is actually proposed), cities such as Cairo and Nairobi will become regional economic centres, and may get train connections to the outside world as well.
India is also getting a boost.

What does this have to do with Dubai's economy? Dubai is situated bang in the middle of Europe, Asia and Africa. Today, it's in no man's land, but as transport can bring people safer and easier around the world, this will make Dubai comparable to a hotel in the middle of London, location-wise: Close to everything, and plenty of shopping options within walking distance. When the boom hits the Middle East, the Emirates will already be an established meeting point, whereas cities such as Baghdad and Jerusalem will be too "old" for a core role. Dubai has no famous landmarks to preserve, or religious fanatics quarreling about every street corner. There's nothing there but desert, just build and be happy, and three continents are just a train ride away.

Though, I'd really rather they fix the sewage system there before I go. Currently, it's dimensioned for a population of 500 000.

^ Yeah I'm definitely sure that that image and several others on the post where it came from are from Stockholm, I can't really point out on which station it is though (but if I were to hazard a guess then it would be at Rinkeby Station), and then again "Upp" and "Ej Upp" isn't really Arabic :)
90% of the Stockholm Metro features stations that have some kind of "Art" in them, and several of them have become signature pieces of how great stations look...

Original post with more images, and a comment on it stating that the images are from Stockholm.
