Ok not really, but today Banksy is apparently announcing his latest exhibition thingy, which seems to be something of a criticism of all-things-Disney and the like.

"The UK's most disappointing new visitor attraction!"

Yeah, that's what they're promising now, but then you go there and it's nothing like you expected, and-

...well played.

What a load of pretentious ****.

Do we really not have anything better to do as a nation?

Although the guy with the lasagne on the Carousel is fab.

Although I like some of the 'pieces', the "let's take something happy and make it twisted"/"life's not always a fairytale" approach is rather rote.

^^ In what way do you find it pretentious?
It's just a bit of fun, I think it looks brilliant! Hopefully I can get there before it finishes.

Ooh taking the piss out of Disneyland and plastic theme park culture. Talk about shooting fish in a barrel.

I would have expected something a little less obvious from Banksy.

I find it quite funny that he's knocking a place that is "popular with low income holiday makers" (that quote really wound me up) by building a faux theme park.

Dismaland charges an entrance fee, provides countless opportunities for gormless selfies and opens during the peak school holidays. But it's a parody, so it's , like...different, right? It's superior to all those other cynical tourist attractions, right?

What a perfect day out for middle class hipsters. I just hope they remember to pack their soy caramel lattes and organic caviar salads for lunch.

(nb: I'm from Bristol. I'm allowed to be sick of Banksy.)

(Oh, and if the Banksy Museum exhibition was anything to go by: expect 6-8 hour queues just to see it)

I did love some of his new work shown in the park and the exhibit. Some favorites:

I'm with Ben and Serena on this one. It's just very pretentious.

Apparently a bunch of Disney goons are getting their knickers in a twist over this but I think they may just be missing the point a bit.

*shrug* modern art is a bunch of garbage.

Why am I not surprised by this at all

Oh come on its just a bit of fun. I agree that much of modern art is pretentious ****, but I don't think this fits into that category. Most of the 'pieces' are genuinely interesting to look at and stand alone without applying some deep concept behind it. I reckon most of the pretentious political messages and meanings have been added by visitors and the media, and Banksy's train of thought was more stuff like 'lets have a whale jump out of the toilet, that would be funny.' I don't see this 'park' as a satirical and deep piece of modern art, more of an exhibition of cool and humorous things to look at, because why not.
At least much of this has genuine skill or thought behind it, unlike actual pretentious crap like this:

^I'm not sure Banksy would appreciate you saying all his art is shallow and meaningless.

It's all trying to make a statement about commercialism etc and like Serena says it's all so obvious.

There's no one here who couldn't do that if they wanted to. 'Lol Disney are bad lol SeaWorld are bad' it's so obvious.

And putting it all in a paid entry environment so people can come and snarf loudly at it and think they're cultured because they get the painfully obvious references just sums up being a pretentious **** stain.

This is like the object equivalent of someone whose wardrobe is full of Jack Wills and nothing else, scoffing about how clever they are when it's just shallow and obvious. There's not an original thought on display here. This is Banksy selling out and watching the cash flow.

Lol, oh mouse you are funny. You realise that the majority of Banksy pieces have a political message behind them right? It's just a fact.

I think it should also be noted that he got other artists involved too, so not everything is his. however they do all share the same theme of using pop references to make a statement about something.

Yeah I am totally with Ben on this one. Nothing wrong with Banksy, I do appreciate his works, but people just make the assumption he's edgy. To be honest, he's only making the same statements everyone else is saying... just in an exaggerated manor. Sure his art is cool, don't get me wrong. But it's kinda shallow and meaningless. Though come to think of it, that could be the point.
