Cedar Point Test Paints Mantis

Cedar Point has test painted a portion of Mantis' track green and silver. No word on what is intended, but no doubt the floorless conversion rumors will come back in full force.

I think that, if a decent enough shade, green track looks pretty good, if a little gaudy.

I've never understood the floorless conversion rumors. How would that work with such a high heartline on the track? It'd be a heck of a jump into your seat.

^Hmmm this would be an interesting debate whether new cred or not. I doubt its a new cred. But the train type change keeps me wondering. That greenish color looks too bright though. :?

Floorless conversion rumors have been around for Mantis for ages, mostly from wishful enthusiasts who want Cedar Point to atone for its 90s Stand-up design to something more comfortable.

However, up until around 2005, riders were allowed to ride Mantis sitting down (that is, lower the restraints to a seated position). Cedar Point eventually did away with this option as it lengthened loading time (not that it already takes the length of an episode of Robot Chicken to load already), but shows that it is possible to ride outside of the "heartline" design and still have it be alright.

Remember, the ride already has a first hill trim and MCBR to control speed, which could be further adjusted for a floorless train.

That is, if any credence is to be given to the 15 year old floorless rumor.

Why cant they just slap on the type of train found on Georgia Scorcher?

^isn't that the same exact style of train??

I always thought the yellow/red/blue color was an interesting choice. I'd like to see what the Green and Silver would look like on the whole track.

Mantis houses the Bicycle Seat of Ball Crushing, Scorcher uses a cut off type seat that made the ride 500% more bearable to ride.

I know I'm probably alone in this, but here goes anyway:

I hope it's only a repaint, and not a conversion. I enjoyed it when I was there last year.

I don't mind it. Not my absolute favorite, but I will ride it no questions asked.

I'll join in saying that B&M Stand-up coasters are fun. Not the most ergonomic ride by any measure, but I haven't ridden one that I didn't enjoy. I too am hoping this is only a paint refresh.

I can't help but wonder if this could be some kind of primer for the King James rumor. Maybe the silver and green are both different types of primer that they're going to try before picking one to paint the whole coaster a different color. :?

As for the floorless conversion, I think the floorless and standup trains have about the same heartline height, so it shouldn't change the experience that much. And no, I don't think it counts as a new cred. Nobody counted SheiKra with the new floorless trains as a new cred. But all they really need to do is build a concrete ramp in the station to lift you up a few feet or so to get in, really.

I didn't find Mantis that bad either. One thing that did stand out to me is how run down it was; It needs a serious paint job, the station looks battered and unkept and whole area in which Mantis sits is just really dirty and overgrown. Hopefully a re-theme and a paint job will give it a new lease of life.

As for it converting to floorless; it's easily do-able like Jarrett said. The heartline isn't that different anyway, and when you think about the difference between minimum and maximum rider heights Mantis currently has it can be easily done. Hope it stays as it is though.

When I was there nine years ago I enjoyed it, but it's nowhere near as good as Riddler's Revenge. When I road it they made you put your feet all the way back against the train and stand up as straight as possible, no grace for saving the boys.

And Jarrett...no. Just no in terms of the King James ****.

How about brand new trains with the new OTSR? That'll be really interesting to see how B&M pulls off a new stand up coaster train.

Didn't say I WANTED it to happen, I honestly couldn't care less about the whole thing, I'm just saying this might be what they're doing. Maybe put in a sound system like Banshee's lift that plays the sound of a cheering crowd on the way up and a loud basketball buzzer at the top? :p

I honestly thought Mantis was worse than Carowinds Vortex and that's saying something. So much headbanging and I don't like how the standups suck all the blood to your feet, I find it painful. I didn't like Scream much either, though, due to headbanging, but it was better than if it had been a standup. I would like to try an inclined loop on a sitdown coaster, though, so I'm hoping this is the unlikely floorless conversion.

It was a publicity stunt, and that is not what they are doing, they aren't testing paint colors because of Lebron **** James.

I personally thought Mantis was the most painful ride in the park. My legs were completely numbed by the ride leaving me very uncomfortably the entire ride. Hopefully this is just a repaint though as the floorless conversion is pointless with them having Gatekeeper already.

And Tomahawk, see you like Lebron as much as us Pacer fans ;)

Cedar Point is still figuring out its game plan for delivering on the LBJ naming, but I'd hardly think the colors green and silver have anything to do with it.

I don't get too worked up about the heartline discussion with Stand-Ups, as it will vary widely from rider to rider. The minimum height requirement for Mantis is 54 inches, which one would assume is the "designed" heartline. However, I am 75 inches tall, and comfortably ride as well. That is the difference of a 1 and 3/4 feet, which shows there is no exact science nor number for the design.

Again though, the floorless rumor has been kicking around for 10+ years, and thus far we have only seen Cedar Point paint the bottom-side of one portion of track. So approach with hesitancy.
