Your favourite type of Architecture?

Hey all,

Another useless topic, but, I've been thinking lately, I love modern architecture. Everything about where we are heading in terms of architecture amazes me. I was talking to a friend of mine who said he thinks new buildings are ugly and look horrid, he preferred much older type of architecture. Like stately homes etc.

I think old and new are both amazing. But, If I had to make a choice, I'd go with old. There's just something about old Architecture. It always tells a story.

The top image is Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Currently, the world's tallest building. I just thought it captured what I wanted to show for "Modern Architecture".

The bottom image is "The Three Graces" in Liverpool. It's on the Riverbank (as you can see) and they're very iconic for Liverpool (The one on the left is The Liver Building )

It really depends, I don't think I could ever choose.

I think some modern buildings look absolutely stunning (the Burj Khalifa, Petronas Towers and many many more being excellent examples). I marvel at not only their looks, but their engineering and design. They really show how far man-kind has come.

However, that's not to say I don't appreciate older buildings too. I think there are many impressive old buildings (way too many to list off the top of my head) that I marvel at from the engineering side too.

So no, I'm not going to be able to make a choice. They're both good in my opinion.

I've not been to Dubai, I'd love to, it looks like an amazing place. I have been to Liverpool. MANY of times. I only like a few miles out the City Centre, it's like my second home. I go past the buildings quite a lot and just go to see them, they're lovely. They did a massive fireworks and projection even on them in 2008 for Capital of Culture. It was actually beautiful. To be honest, they are pretty nice buildings, especially the Liver Building.

I think I'd have to go with old, because not only does it often have history but so many of the buildings have details that were carved by hand, which is amazing and it's easier to appreciate that than something that was made by a machine. It's why London is my favourite city I think.. The architecture is amazing, nothing like any of the other big cities I have been to (besides maybe Ottawa, but even so), and it has a history.

New architecture is amazing too, though. Like Hixee said, it's amazing to see how far we have come and how the limits are being pushed, etc.

I love medieval Gothic style (let's not get into the entire argument about it's not called gothic and that's a derisive name given to the architecture and stuff), but that kind of period up until renaissance where it starts to get too square. I hate Georgian period for the most part and most Victorian. I love Greek and Roman architecture too actually.

So in terms of old, it's a real mix depending on the particular period in question. I like some modern architecture, and I love the technology involved in it. Again, it's a real mixed bag. The concrete flats of Burslem are "modern" but utterly hideous. Compare them with a similar aged set of 1960's buildings in Brocton Village on the edge of Cannock chase and there's a whole world of difference.

So, erm, no real answer, can you narrow down the periods, styles ages and final use please?

^ Would that be like the style of Big Ben and a lot of other buildings in London? Big Ben is one of my favourite buildings but I didn't know the specific architecture style. That first pic is fab though.

Yeah, "Old" being anything pre-modernism movement in Architecture. So like, I know most of it's not old. But it's just everything that isn't made out of steel and glass to be honest

I do like some modern architecture, although I do despise buildings that are designed by people who have just done a 'Degree in Modern Architecture and Building Design' and believe its ok for everything they design to have a ****ing curved roof and ****ing 'textures'

Some examples of this include

I do really like architecture that has an industrial feel to it, sort of like the Lloyds building, and old railway stations such as Paddington and St Pancras ect,
Like Hixee, this is probably more from an engineering side.

London has had some interesting new buildings over the last few years, strangest being the Strata;

It has wind turbines built into the top.

My favourite 'old' building in London is Battersea Power Station, it was built like a cathedral to power.

I love that Strata one. I also love the new Shard Tower thing under construction. It looks aesthetically amazing.
