Premier Rides are to build the world's tallest indoor coaster for the new Great Mall of China project to open in 2013 just outside Beijing. It will include Premier's magnetic launch technology and "unique elements".

The press release from Premier Rides states:

“Premier Rides has been selected to design and manufacture a signature high-thrill roller coaster for what will be the largest mixed-use development project in the world, the Great Mall of China. The Premier attraction, commissioned by the Berjaya Great Mall of China Co. Ltd., will be the tallest indoor roller coaster in the world. The ride will be designed and built in the United States and exported to China.

The yet-to-be-named super launch coaster integrates many exciting and unique elements, including Premier’s advanced magnetic drive technologies. The dramatic layout will be enclosed in one of the largest free-span buildings in Asia. For competitive reasons, additional ride specifications will be released by the Berjaya Great Mall of China Co. Ltd. later in 2012.

Located only 25km from Beijing International Airport in Yanjiao City, Heibei Province, People’s Republic of China, the 76-acre project will consist of various modern recreational facilities that integrate amusement and leisure into the commercial landscape. Retail shops, entertainment venues, an indoor theme park, and a water park will make the 15 million square foot Great Mall of China a landmark in the region. The project is slated to open in 2013.

“We’re excited to bring this caliber of ride to the Great Mall of China,” said Berjaya Great Mall of China’s Kevin Tan. “We believe that Premier Rides’ new attraction will satisfy even the most fearless thrill-seekers, and then some. As a signature attraction of the Great Mall of China, it will certainly set the bar high not only for this project but for the whole Asia region.”

Jim Seay, president of Premier Rides, commented, “The theme park market in China is an exciting one and all of us at Premier are motivated to not only be part of that market, but to also set the industry standard by bringing in a world-class attraction for the Berjaya Great Mall of China group. The minds behind the Great Mall of China certainly wanted to make a statement with their thrilling new project and we are honored to be part of their formula for success.”

Seay recently accompanied Governor Martin O’Malley on a trade mission to China, executed by the State of Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Development. Meetings during the trade mission facilitated Premier Rides in securing the agreement with Berjaya Great Mall of China Co. Ltd. “Maryland’s determined efforts to increase exports to places like China are an important element of Premier’s success,” said Seay. “Premier Rides is very appreciative of the State’s resourceful programs in this area.”

The last large Chinese mall project, South China Mall, was a disastrous failure. It was the biggest shopping mall in the world when built (maybe still is), but has been left with 95-99% empty retail space since 2005.

This new venture should hopefully do a lot better, given its location near Beijing (and near the airport) and the fact that it's a multi-purpose venue.

Anyway, this coaster sounds promising. The current tallest indoor coaster is, correct me if I'm wrong, Mindbender in Canada. This means that this new coaster will have to be taller than 145 feet to get the "tallest indoor" record.

Personally, I'm betting on a "Mr. Freeze" style spike as the tallest point of this coaster.

Wow I can't believe it took someone over 25 years to take the record for the tallest indoor coaster. These mega malls becoming more and more common. You'd think when the Mall of America opened it would have tried to take the title, not to mention the amount of large shopping centres that have opened up in Asia. I'll be sad to see Mindbender lose the title, its a great Stengel coaster.

Well, Im not sure if a coaster 145+ feet would fit in Mall Of America.
The tallest ride there is spongebob and avatar, and they are both around 70 feet tall.
They also both come fairly close to the roof, so I really doubt a 145+ foot coaster would fit in MOA.

That said, it shows just how huge this mall will be, if its going to have such a large roller coaster within it, and its in China, and theyve been having an amazing amount of developments going on, so I would expect the mall to be pretty dam amazing!

I know this is a bit (well a lot) OT, but I have always been a bit morbidly fascinated with that South China Mall place and this thread made me re-google it a bit today.

Anyways, found a good little (13min) documentary about it;

(theres a coaster and a few rides in the film.)

I was mainly referring to when they built the mall why the brothers didn't plan to build a larger roller coaster. The Ghermezian brothers built both the Mall of America and West Edmonton Mall, you would think they would want to out do they're previous creation by building a mall thats even bigger and better.

^I know it seems strange to say this about an indoor amusement park, but the Mall of America is height limited by not just its roof, but also by its proximity to Minneapolis-Saint Paul HHH International Airport.

Even at its current height, it is a truly massive structure, and it sits just a few hundred meters from the airport. They really aren't permitted to go much (if any) higher than it is now. There's lots of info out there about a land-swap they did for the expansion where they gave up the land the light rail comes in on in exchange for the lot next to Ikea because on the land they owned, they couldn't even build to the current height of the original mall as that lot is even closer to the runway approach.
