To be honest, unless your PC is more than 4 or 5 years old, I cannot see any reason for not going with XP (unless it is a SERIOUSLY low spec machine).

It's doubtful if you could even get a 98 system running on hardware less than two years old anyway. We struggle enough getting Windows 2K going, and that uses a lot of the same drivers and stuff XP does.

When I first put on XP, I used the mode to make it mimic 98 (Madame_F didn't like the changes), but that soon went away because the new XP interface is pretty good.

I really can't see how people can do much with a PC that's running 98 nowadays, they're certainly missing out on a wealth of media, games and Internet stuff that 98 just doesn't support.

The update didn't do much t just let you use USB and I think it as SLIGHTLY easier to use but I can't see much difference.

Close, I can see why you would get confused, though. When released, 98 had USB compatibility out of the box, the SE of 98 didnt add it. It was 95SE that was the first to let you use USB, 95 when first released couldnt.

XP....it is just so much more stable than 98.
I agree with aero, Windows XP is more stable. I work as an ICT Technician and ever since we upgraded to Windows XP there has been less problems.

XP all the way, i run XP Media Centre on my Pc & Professional on my Laptop, can't tell the difference, used to have 98SE on my old PC, was fun because i could fully customise my Desktop! I can still do that on XP Professional on my Laptop, it gives you the feature in the "Desktop Properties" to change your taskbar & the windows to the older Windows Original theme, then you can customise it to the colour themes, mine was always the Rainy Day theme on 98SE, now it's the Default Blue on XP!

I use 98, I hate all the fancy <img src="http://www.coasterforce.info/images/smiles/5censored.gif" width="34" height="15"> xp has. Its got all these usless annoying things on it, even though theyre optional, that just get in the way. But alot of it isnt optional still. Mostly stupid things like the cursor shadow, stupid bubbly menus and whatnot, etc. Basically, its crap thats there to make it look good and fancy, but doesnt help at all to the operation of the machine. I guess Im a minimalist then. But even though XP is probably safer, I dont like how it acts. Things like folders, start menu set-ups, operation things like that. I dont like change usually, and getting xp means Id have to learn how to use a completely different operating system practically... I just dont feel like it. Besides, I only got a virus once and that was my fault, for accepting a curiously named MS-DOS file that was automatically sent to everyone when this.. one person.. signed on. Windows '98 doesnt feel 8 years old, as long as I have virus scans and a working hard drive, 98 works perfectly fine and doesnt have the extra crap. Whats the SE part?

Since when in s h i t e censored, and crap not?

XP isn't much safer... I think it's easier to get spy/adware on it. Who cares about things like shadow cursor? Only reason a lot of us use it is because it came pre-installed on our systems. Good reasons why we use it is:

Plug and Play
Upgrading Drivers is easier
The data trail is faster than 98/2000
Better Task Manager, you can actually see whats sucking up all your processors juice
Other stuff, i dont know.

I prefer windows XP Pro, it's considerably faster than XP Home.

I got 30 copies for free from my cousins @ college, so don't start that piracy bull**** w/ me.

WTF are you on about. It has a built in firewall, many computers now come with a free antivirius software which 98 dosent come with. Also it comes with various other saftey measures.

Again.... WTF ARE YOU ON ABOUT? "the only reason why we use it is because it is pre-intalled on outs systems" Come on... look at the poles! I would definately use XP instead of 98! and many other people on the forum also agree with me.

Well it is all of that and like 100 other things!

XPs firewall sucks, and most people usually dont even need it nowadays, since most are behind a router that has a hardware firewall. You would be right about the anivirus software, except thats a 3rd party thing thats installed on your system by the company who you bought the computer from. It has nothing to do with Windows whatsoever. If you buy Windows XP from a store, it has no such thing.

Uh, hes right...? How many people actually go out and buy their OS? Not many, most just go and buy a computer and use whatever OS is already installed, and the only time they upgrade is when they buy a new computer. If XP was released as a software-only thing that wasnt allowed to be put on new computers built by companies like HP and Dell, how many people would actually go out and buy XP? They wouldnt want to hassle with it, so not many.

Well it is all of that and like 100 other things!

What other things? He basically summed it up, and looking pretty isnt one of those 100 things, as that takes up CPU cycles and makes the computer slower.

If you are going to talk about technology, you really should know your stuff. Its a really good idea, try it sometime.

^Thank you, I couldn't have said it better myself.

Some people think they're smarter than they are... but that's okay. I'm as dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to some things. But I knew what I was talking about there.

XP isn't much safer by the way. Just look how the firewall worked when blaster was around... Nope, didn't see it work there.
