peep

CF Legend
Day 19 - Wednesday 25th

We woke up fairly early, definitely early enough to have breakfast with all the business peeps at the hotel. The range of food on offer wasn't amazing but we made do. A few train rides later and we found ourselves at Tobu-dobutsu-koen station. This photo below proves it...

1422469_10153462079235360_520364733_n.jpg

Not sure how easy it would be to navigate to Tobu Zoo we were happy to see the sign above us with helpful directions, it was a good sign.

1451477_10153462078765360_688572829_n.jpg

The train station had some burger chain fast food place, they were the ones with the ridiculous tower burgers in which you can keep adding more to (what the 120/150Y bit is all about)...

New things! We love new things

1456514_10153462081000360_2005761084_n.jpg

The signs continued to do their job correctly

The whole route to the park (a 10-15 minute walk) had these little picture tiles in the pavement which was cool...

Before long we could see exciting things...

514_10153462082770360_1198052330_n.jpg

I'd like to point out that doing this walk was so much easier than Google street view made it look. The following bridge has to be crossed...

1459699_10153462085310360_1691716709_n.jpg

A pretty river

Once across the bridge you turn right which is where you'll see the park entrance...

Terrifying spider

As you can tell from the following picture the weather wasn't great, there were rainy spells on and off all day.

1395166_10153462087895360_1330031728_n.jpg

Right

We then had to queue a whole 0 seconds to get some tickets. The lady behind the counter tried her best to inform us that rides might not open. She did wait until we had purchased our tickets to inform us of this though. After Yokohama spite we weren't pleased by this news but with the potential for the weather to get better we decided to just try and make the most of our day no matter what.

1391595_10153462090725360_123891081_n.jpg

I love Intamin drop towers, I don't like closed ones though

We came across the first little area of rides including a very closed but still moving ferris wheel. We decided to venture into Galaxy Walkers. It was special.

1424422_10153462093500360_1907156849_n.jpg

So, just what is Galaxy Walkers? It's a very outdated walkthrough attraction from the 80s is what it is. The 3 staff members at the entrance looked amused that we were going to give it a go and gave us a sheet explaining everything in English. I like parks that are prepared for us. The whole idea is that there's loads of different rooms with tasks of sorts. Nic doesn't like things jumping out so to say some of the rooms were not to her liking would be an understatement. I bet the staff loved watching us over the CCTV. All the effects were quite outdated but sort of amusing. Well, not for Nic. There was one room where you had to find the door that led to the rest of the attraction. One of the doors we opened had this little alien figure and a loud noise, we both jumped lol. The door that did work led us into a pitch black room which freaked both of us out a bit, the not knowing what could happen made it quite an intense moment. Especially after spending ages trying to convince Nic it would be ok to go through.

At the end there was a tub filled with these things with barcodes on. You then had to go to the back of it, pass through the barcodes and hope you find the right one. We just chucked all of them through and we found the correct one pretty quickly.

1382781_10153462095325360_2042102836_n.jpg

I can't remember what happens after that but we soon exited the attraction a little puzzled by this very dated attraction.

Closed cred

1441331_10153462098700360_419612538_n.jpg

I think Nic was pleased that this was closed

1451437_10153462099095360_1103502392_n.jpg

More closed cred

We decided to ride the carousel next, not sure why.

I love how these TOGO animals are like a thing in Japanese parks.

1456576_10153462126370360_932169974_n.jpg

A new kids area was under construction for 2014 season already and it includes a kiddy cred!

1455063_10153462126705360_1305769726_n.jpg

There was a random area filled with topiarys of animals, it was oddly no where near a path.

1382300_10153462128945360_1552033721_n.jpg

Ferris wheel #2 was part of a new farmyard area. It was cleverly themed to a cheese factory. We were quite impressed that a park had gone to the trouble of giving such an attraction a whole theme and story. It also worked quite well.

1465240_10153462129425360_360941155_n.jpg

The new area was really nice.

So we then totally went on the tractor ride. We also went on the train ride.

What we saw next totally changed our lives forever. RED PANDA!!!!!!!!

936011_10153462149570360_2075817413_n.jpg

They have to be the cutest thing in existence. We'll be coming back to see them as they were inside sleeping due to the weather.

The penguin enclosure was quite cool, they had about 6 or 7 different species of penguin.

1456755_10153462163905360_1849543722_n.jpg

The goat enclosure was a little scary, because goats just are.

Kawaii owl.

1425552_10153462166845360_1522706266_n.jpg

They had a kangaroo walkthrough enclosure so we decided to venture in.

There were some on the path which led us to just backtrack rather than try and get past.

I'm fabulous

1462979_10153462170100360_712263643_n.jpg

Yo

They had a lemur walkthrough enclosure which I was so excited by, but it turned out to be a little awkward. It was just us two and then two zoo keepers. All pretty much standing in silence watching the lemurs going mental.

They had bears in small cages.

And they had hip-hip-hippopotamus.

The lions were pretty much doing the same, sleeping. There was a passageway which allowed you to enter a small viewing area in the middle of the enclosure. It got you so close to them.

It's so bizarre, I wouldn't have said that meerkats would like living in such close proximity to Lions.

1422355_10153462203160360_2074152726_n.jpg

As we were getting back round to where the rides were we heard something magical. We heard the sound of a coaster running. It could only mean one thing, Kawasemi was open!!!!!!!! Being only two of about 20 people in the actual park we were the first on.

1235338_10153462204030360_1733050580_n.jpg

It was so amazing, I had heard loads of people rave about Piraten but couldn't quite believe the hype. Well if it runs anything like this then I can totally believe the hype now. It's got so much airtime and the ride just flows so well. We became instant fans of it. We had a couple of goes before grabbing some food as we were starving by this point.

1422606_10153462204210360_1963120820_n.jpg

The food we got was quite nice and the staff were lovely, it was more like a school cafeteria than a park restaurant. After some more Kawasemi awesomeness we noticed that the caterpillar cred was testing.

1391995_10153462206875360_1753513845_n.jpg

Although the following then happened time and time again.

It was getting a little frustrating, just continuous testing. A small crowd had formed at the excitement of getting the cred.

1394053_10153462207890360_1165627802_n.jpg

We really wanted to know what the whole additional 2013 bit was all about. We never asked anyone but we eventually worked out that it was a thing the park were doing where you got like a card sheet and got a stamp for every ride you went on. If only we had known we would have totally done this. Anyway after some time waiting the ride finally opened and the goons that we are we were like the first in the queue and we managed to get front row.

1391981_10153462208750360_108643126_n.jpg

We then went back for another ride on Kawasemi. By this point others had discovered its wonders so although we didn't have to queue we only decided to only do it once before moving on.

1456610_10153462208350360_1802617496_n.jpg

Engrish <3

We felt like getting a snack so went to the little bear stall which we had seen at other parks. We had the sundae which involved one of the little bears on top of some soft serve ice cream with some corn flakes at the bottom. It was nom.

1452520_10153462209025360_2121324808_n.jpg

We then went back into the zoo because we wanted to see the red pandas again because they're so adorable. This time they were out and about and being like the cutest things ever <3

The Elephant says no

There were more squirrel monkeys in an outdoor enclosure, they were confined to these little islands with all these ropes going everywhere.

1441232_10153462234725360_926543975_n.jpg

We decided to then take the train ride over to the area where Regina lives. The ride was open! We couldn't believe our luck. From thinking we wouldn't get any of the three coasters to riding all three really made our day.

Regina was actually amazing but from the front row I could tell that the back would probably be dreadful so I decided to skip going to the back row, unlike Nic who seemed to love it. Oddly enough we had decided that just two rides was enough despite no one else in the area. It had started to rain a little bit though which did make our second ride a little bit more unbearable.

So, as we had gotten off and down the slippery slope of an exit we decided to head back over to Kawasemi for one last ride on that.

1451984_10153462238065360_612299549_n.jpg

And that was the end of our time at Tobu Zoo. It was a shame the weather was miserable but the park was nice, a little dated in some areas but generally nice. I think it could have done with more people in the park too, I think that would have provided a nice atmosphere.

That wasn't the end of our day though, we only had a few days left in Japan and we weren't going to just sit around.

The cloudy weather made the Skytree look even more awesome...

994977_10153462238500360_1204694437_n.jpg

We decided to check out Akihabara which is an area of Tokyo well known for its arcades and electronics shops. There was an AKB48 cafe which I'm a little annoyed we didn't go in (purely for the lolz). Fun fact: AKB48 stands for Akihabara, the 48 stands for how many people are in the group. I'll let that ridiculousness set in.

1390656_10153462238900360_1135057691_n.jpg

Next door was a cafe themed to Gundam. They love their themed cafes/restaurants, they even had a British pub....

Pachinko madness

We ended up in a restaurant on like the 8th floor of some building. It was quite nice inside. There was a large table of really loud people. Judging by the reactions of other guests and all the photos and excitement one or more of the people on that table were famous. It added to the atmosphere and amusement anyhow. We were creating our own amusement though.

The above is a touch screen ordering system. The waiter advised us to use it but said we could call him over if need be. We have no idea what we were doing and I don't know why we even tried to use it. The kitchen must have been getting all these orders coming through when we were like "panic! help!". The waiter came over, deleted our mistakes and took our proper order. Let's look at what we successfully ordered.

We then spent a couple of hours, being talked to by maids, spending loads of money in arcades and getting claustrophobic in magna comic stores (they were very popular places to be). It was then back to the hotel for some rest.

Thanks again for reading :)

CF Legend
Day 20 - Thursday 26nd

We couldn't quite believe it but the day had come to visit our last Japanese theme park. We really didn't want this adventure to end but all good things must come to and end at some point. So we got ready as usual, ate some food at the hotel with all the business peeps again while some crazy TV programme was on. It was then a couple of trains later when we arrived at Kuroiso Station ready for Nasu Highland Park. The website informs of a bus, the "Nasu Highland Park Line". Great info, looking at the bus stop and the lack of anyone remotely interested in parks gave us a bad feeling. There was a lack of info on this park bus and we started to become a little concerned. There was an office related to the bus stop so we went in there to ask for info. Turns out that the park's website missed out on one very crucial piece of information. The bus only runs on holidays and weekends. The gentleman did love telling us we could go to some spa up the mountain instead in which we insisted we weren't interested in. Sigh.

1459145_10153462285555360_1270973391_n.jpg

Apparently where the bus will turn up

In a slight worry/panic about how we managed to mess this up and with no public transport options we decide to ask a local taxi driver how much it'd set us back. A lot of monies was the answer. However it was either travel all the way back into Tokyo and do general touristy things after wasting lots of time on trains or spend the money we hadn't been spending (we well over-budgeted how much we'd spend on this trip). So we took a gamble and paid the kind gentleman willing to take us to the park. It's about a 30 minute ride by car and it's actually a really nice journey, it's very foresty and up in the mountains.

Our driver was also really kind and friendly and told us it was cheaper than he quoted as he'd taken a shortcut. He then provided us with his number so the park could call him to pick us up when we were finished. I admit our hopes of getting creds weren't high as when we were approaching the park, occasional glances through the trees at loads of creds, we couldn't see anything running. Could this just end up being a whole day of spite? We got to the park ticket counter and saw a rather long list of rides not operating, however it wasn't long enough for everything to be closed and we'd made a long journey to get there so we paid to get in.

I think the first thing we noticed was how bloody cold it was. Note to self: When travelling up into the mountains, take a coat. There was a fierce wind that was really strong and was clearly the reason a fair amount of rides weren't operating. Inside the park we came across Halloween theming, standard. But it also came with theming for the Olympics and Easter?

I think the mountain air must do something to their logic.

I'd like to mention at this point how cool this park was, it had a sort of Legoland Windsor layout to it, you start at the top and work your way to the bottom where the creds lay. However the scenery is far superior to Windsor.

So first things first, cred! The Woopy coaster to be precise.

It was a fairly standard little powered coaster. Apparently it's been with the park for years but they had decided to give it a new makeover and theme it to the park mascot. I really liked the new trains.

Our second coaster of the day was Panic Drive. I'm annoyed I don't have a great deal of photos showing this one off as it's just weird. Whoever made it needs to learn what banking is. However I think we enjoyed it, maybe because it was different from the standard wild mouse coasters.

The cars were awesome despite completely not fitting in with the coasters colour scheme

We decided to wander into the Bandai museum next which has clearly been at the park for a very long time but regularly updated.

The park had loads of unusual things laying about like a Victorian garden complete with random model village around a water feature.

As you can tell, these park has a lot of stairs. Still, it was randomly pretty. We then saw the safari ride in which you travel around in these little vehicles shooting at random animals. Yep, the safari ride is a shooting attraction, not a "aww, look at the fake animals".

They had a rather large double carousel.

... Yep, a Viking themed swinging ship.

Another thing we noticed a lot of in Japan were romantic areas. They were oddly very popular and you could usually find a couple or two taking selfies of them kissing.

I quite like Batflyers despite them all having the same layout. I have to admit I was shocked to find one in Japan. I liked the hedge towards the end, was a nice addition (probably by accident).

We went to check out the SLC. It was closed. We were sad because it's one less cred but we were happy because it was an SLC. It appeared to be closed for maintenance/refurb reasons rather than the strong winds though.

What we aptly named Green cred (actually called Thunder Coaster) is a double corkscrew contraption of torturous pain. But it was a +1 so it was good. To say these coasters at the bottom were a bit special is like the understatement of the year. Look at this ever so exciting first drop complete with tyres (for brakes???).

1452025_10153462307800360_718824466_n.jpg

The Camel coaster (which was closed) has a monkey character. Yep.

Pretty much everyone that came off the green cred went on the go karts. It was a nice little ride, I say little, it goes on for ages (no photographic evidence of this).

The 50s eating area had some cool car booths.

In search of one last cred that was open (that's 5 out of 9 that were open), Shinpi we had to go all the way to the top of the park again. I thought we had seen everything but this ride once again showed me that the possibilities of weird are endless. From the outside I liked the theme. Was weird that the coaster travels outside for a bit.

Here's Gavin's POV from years ago, you can't see much but it shows enough to make you go "wtf was that about?"...

There appears to be no correlation between each scene and each scene in itself doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I've given up trying to understand it now.

The rapids had a really cool building, I think it was shut, not like we were going to go on in this cold weather anyhow. Knowing our luck it would have been one of the rare water rides in Japan that do achieve wetness.

I think our next ride was awesome. The Jet ski petrol powered monorail! Oh yes, this actually exists.

74936_10153462324060360_902713903_n.jpg

The ride gave us some nice views of the park (and the closed creds). What was brilliant was you were in control of the speed of the jet so I was able to pause to take photos, it was fun until other people decided to catch up with us :p

Back near the top of the park we decided to check out the brand new Hello Kitty robot experience thing. There were a whole bunch of interactive challenges and the whole thing was free roam so you didn't have to do everything and you could do things at your own pace, which was nice.

1452348_10153462339635360_650626923_n.jpg

Entrance hall was filled with Hello Kitty dressed up in various outfits. Here's Hello 'Robin Hood' Kitty.

601787_10153462340235360_106875936_n.jpg

At the end of each challenge you gain a ribbon depending on how well you did. All the ribbons equated to your end score.

Apparently I stopped taking pictures at that point, which is a shame because it was all sorts of special. Oh well, time for me to experience another dark ride. This time I rode alone because it was time for dark Castle. Nic was concerned it would be too scary for her. I ended up riding with some amused girls. I was more glad it just wasn't another headphone ride, they were a bit too creepy for my liking. This was more traditional and they had put some decent effort in here and there but overall it was a little disappointing.

603149_10153462346060360_1201055380_n.jpg

Next door was Pokemon 4D. I can't tell you how excited we were about going to see this. We noticed the seats had leg ticklers so we managed to block those off before they could annoy us. The film was just random, more like a montage of all the pokemon. Still, we enjoyed it, probably more than we should have done.

1391622_10153462346455360_1584880647_n.jpg

We decided to explore some of the park a bit more. They had a random foot spa with water from the highlands.

1385889_10153462348240360_417872304_n.jpg

We played this game which was amazing.

We went in search of food. We found the following but in fear we wouldn't be able to eat through our tears of laughter we moved on.

1395145_10153462348885360_1924143711_n.jpg

We ended up eating in the 50s themed area. I think we just had a burger of sorts, nothing exciting. We spent some time in their Lego store which was fun. We then decided to take a ride on the UFO Flyer, another Dumbo-esque ride themed to UFOs. It was fun and had lots of sound effects.

We then went back to the safari shooty ride. It was dreadful.

1453486_10153462360690360_567277700_n.jpg

We then made our way to the exit. We went into guest services to ask them to call the taxi driver to which they looked confused. The number was for somewhere "too far away" and they insisted they called someone else. We weren't too pleased but there was no changing their mind, we would have felt awful if we bumped into the other taxi driver, especially after he took a shortcut and charged us less. Oh well, after a 10-15 minute wait a new taxi driver turns up, puzzled at the sight of some English people and he drove us back to the train station.

Such a nice location

Nasu Highland was a nice park, even if it was stuck in a 90's Saved by the bell theme. Their coasters were all a bit weird too (apart from Woopy).

Nic got a maple syrup milk drink at the train station, it was weird.

It was then back on the trains over to Shinjuku. There's a Government tower building which has viewing areas at the top for free so we went up there.

It was then back to the hotel to pack our suitcases and hope we hadn't purchased too much tat.

Day 21 - Friday 27th

Our last hours in Japan. It was a very sad time. Listening to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu* on repeat isn't helping writing this. We took our last train to the airport. The weather was nice and gave us a good view of the SkyTree.

Everything at the airport was rather stress free and relaxed. We had breakfast at a Fujiya family restaurant. It has a little girl as it's logo/mascot.

We were able to watch the plane spotters.

Our flight had a huge amount of Japanese tourist groups going to London. It was hilarious to watch as each group leader checked everyone off his list, before they boarded and once they boarded. Watching them when they got off in London was fun too.

Our flight had little menus which was nice.

Bye Japan *waves*

It was such an incredible trip and I want to do it all again. Everyone was so lovely to us and the food was omnomnom. It was just as crazy as I wanted it to be and it's an experience I'll never forget. Thank you for reading through my giant reporting and I hope you've enjoyed it. There's a part of me that will fill empty now I've finished writing about my time there.

If you would like any advice on future trips there I'm more than happy to help. Just start your planning over a year in advance like we did, it's the only way.

*Totally seeing her next month though XD

Wow. I'm sad it's over too :p I have absolutely loved this trip report, John, amazing.

Shame you got spited, esp in that last park but I suppose that's all part of gooning ;)

One day hopefully I'll go to all these parks, they look fantastic. :D
