Intimidating Birthday Weekend

It's been almost 2 weeks since we headed south to check out the new coasters, so I thought I better get this posted now or I never will.

The kid & I hit the road early Saturday morning before the break of dawn (4:30am) in order to get to Kings Dominion before the park opens so we could have time to process our season passes. As it turned out we could have slept another hour because we made excellent time due to the lack of traffic in Baltimore & Washington DC. So after a 4 hour drive & waiting about 45 minutes just to get into the parking lot, we quickly made our way to the season pass processing center. Once there we were told that we had to go to guest services because our forms were for Cedar Point & we needed Kings Dominion paperwork. Luckily we were there so early, as no one was at the guest services window yet & it only took a couple of minutes to get the forms swapped out. Then it was back to the season pass processing center to get our photos taken & within three minutes we were at the front gate with passes in hand. Another 15 minutes later & we were inside the park.
IMG_3476Small.jpg

Like most American parks, Kings Dominion let's you in the gate at 10am, but you don't have access to the rides until 10:30am. However, at Kings Dominion they do let you ride Dominator from the get go. So we headed straight for Dommy & were on the first train out of the station, which provided us with our first glimpse of Intimidator 305 from the lift hill.
IMG_3478Small.jpg

After three rides on the world's best floorless coaster (IMO) we went to wait for the rope to drop with the rest of the crowd that had started to gather. The roped off area by Dominator is the closest to I305, so we were a bit surprised that the crowd there wasn't much larger. Once they dropped the rope & started walking us to I305's entrance we could see another huge crowd being walked there from the observation tower that was three times the size of the crowd we were walking with. But that crowd was a good 100 paces behind us, so I knew we'd be the first to ride until we got the the coaster's entrance to find another group already lined up ahead of us.
(The people on the right in this photo.)
IMG_3480Small.jpg

So I asked the security guard who walked us over to this point where the people came from & he explained that they were Platinum Pass holders, who are escorted here 10 minutes before everyone else. I showed him our passes & he said that next time we should go just behind the right side of the observation tower to be included with the pass holders group (which we'll be doing for the CF-Live kiddies  ). He then made a joke about it not mattering anyway since we were the first in the regular group & therefore with all the pass holders anyway.
A couple of minutes later & they opened the ride.
IMG_3482Small.jpg

The closer we got the more impressive the coaster looked. As we waited our turn, the ride ops kept announcing that there is only assigned seating due to the loading gates design.
IMG_3485Small.jpg

However we lucked out & we were assigned to the front row for our first ride!
IMG_3511Small.jpg

I wasn't sure what to make of the coaster after my first ride. I anticipated the sharp transactions to keep from getting any neck-chopping, so no complaints there. It just didn't quite blow me away as I expected it to & Aidan agreed, so we decided to go for an immediate re-ride. We were assigned to the 4th row, so I decided to ride with my hands up & not anticipate what was coming next. This time I had some spots in front of my eyes in the banked turn after the first drop & felt the ejector airtime on the hills a bit more, but I also got chopped in the neck a couple a times on the transitions.
We decided to ride it again to see if we could get the back row to see what that was like. We were lucky enough to get the back row on our very next ride & this time I put my hands up on the first drop & the hills, but held on to the restraints while anticipating the transactions. This seemed to be the best way of riding, but it was easier anticipating what was coming next from the front row. We got in a couple more rides in the last car & I started liking the coaster more with each ride, even though I started getting used to that first drop & curve so the black out feeling dissipated more & more each time.
Dave had asked me to get some photos of the transitions, so we decided to take a photography break.
Here is the last one:
IMG_3486Small.jpg

And the first:
IMG_3491Small.jpg

The second is a little further away, so this is the best I could do:
IMG_3492Small.jpg

I also don't think the train is as ugly as everyone makes it out to be.
IMG_3496Small.jpg

So I decided to take some more pics of the transitions with the train going through them.
Here's the first:
IMG_3493Small.jpg

And the last:

And with the train:

Here another angle of the last without:
IMG_3501Small.jpg

And with the train:
IMG_3502Small.jpg

Lots of airtime there:
IMG_3505Small.jpg

But not so much here due to the trims:
IMG_3499Small.jpg

Still this baby cruises right along:
IMG_3506Small.jpg

We wanted to go to Volcano next, but we noticed that it had been down & was still testing, so we headed back around for another ride. The queue also kept getting shorter as the morning wore on.
IMG_3507Small.jpg

Papa, mama & baby hill all in one shot.
IMG_3510Small.jpg

By now I had chatted up the ride ops quite a bit & I was able to get the front row again to make a POV.

With that out of the way it was definitely time to move on & with Volcano still testing, we decided to go up the observation tower to get an aerial view.
IMG_3521Small.jpg

After some photos & filming from on high, we headed over to Volcano to find it still testing for almost 2 hours now. So we took a spin on the Crypt, which is right across from the troubled invert.
IMG_3524Small.jpg

As luck would have it, they opened Volcano right as we were in the middle of our spinning cycle, but it didn't take too long before we were blasting out of the man-made mountain.
IMG_3528Small.jpg

By now we had ridden I305 nine times, but we still wanted more. So it was back for two more rides & some photos of the entrance area...
IMG_3533Small.jpg

...and the gift shop ride exit.
IMG_3513Small.jpg

Now it was late afternoon & we still had a long drive into North Carolina ahead of us. On our way out of the park we went by Drop Zone to get one last look at I305.
IMG_3538Small.jpg

After a fun drop from the skies it was time to hit the road, but we only made it six miles before stopping to chow down at our favorite Cracker Barrel. After filling up on some southern fried steak (the kid had chicken fried chicken) & dumplings, we hit the road for our hotel in Durham, NC.

Next up: Day 2 at Carowinds - so ya'll come back now, ya hear!

Wow.... you're not qualified to say y'all..... :p

But nice pictures, I'm still insanely jealous because I love that park so much, and I can;t wait for the Carowinds part of the TR.

So...basically a good ride, but a little overrated? I'm glad it's re-ridable (or at least it seems like it). Where does it rank for you?

I hate to tell you this Chris, but they were sayin' ya'll in the Southeast long before Texas even became a state. You Texans claim too much as your own. :p

It's a great ride. I just wasn't blown away. I kept thinking that there was no way that I was over 300 feet up when we were at the top of the lift hill & the drop didn't seem that steep. I guess I've just gotten too used to huge, fast coasters.

Day 2 - Carowinds:
After a good night's sleep we hit the road at 7:30am for our 2+ hour drive to Charlotte. It took us a little longer to get there since we decided to stop at Waffle House for a nice breakfast.
Carowinds no longer sneaks up on you as Intimidator can be seen from quite a distance & it sure looks good as you pull into the parking lots.
IMG_3555Small.jpg

Since we arrived about 30 minutes after the park opened we were able to head straight to Intimidator & we were surprised to find a very short queueline.
IMG_3562Small.jpg

Again the ride ops were assigning which row to go to, but unlike I305 there was a slightly extended gate queue for the front row. We asked to wait for the front row, but since there were already about 10 people waiting they said no. So we asked for the back row instead & they obliged.
The ride went just like I expected, with lots of B&M floaty airtime goodness. It reminded me a lot of Nitro, only with the second drop going to the right instead of left. So it's not as good as Diamondback or Behemoth or Goliath at SFOG for that matter, but I put it just ahead of Nitro & Apollo's Chariot. And it's miles better than Raging Bull or Silver Star.
Of course you have to have a good gap under the restraint to take full advantage & the ride crew for this baby is great for that, as my five finger gap proves.
IMG_3587Small.jpg

The trains look very similar to I305's, whether you think they're ugly or not.
IMG_3563Small.jpg

The kid & I both enjoy B&M floaters & since there was virtually no queueline, we re-rode this baby over & over again testing various rows to see which is the best.
IMG_3575Small.jpg

Aidan determined it was actually the front two inside seats on the last car (row 15) & much to my surprise - I agree.
IMG_3581Small.jpg

You get that great pull over the top of the hill you would expect from being in the last car, but the airtime is just a bit better than it is in either of the two outside rear seats.
IMG_3582Small.jpg

So we kept asking for the second to last row every time the ride op started to assign us to a different row & after a while he just automatically started saying "row 15" each time we came through the queue.
IMG_3584Small.jpg

Everyone on the crew was really nice & fun to chat with & after about a dozen rides they all knew our names & that we had come all the way from New York City.
IMG_3585Small.jpg

The ride op who kept automatically giving us row 15 was a bit surprised when I finally asked for the front row so I could make a POV.

After that we asked him for the back row to make a reverse POV.

With so many rides & 2 POVs under our belts, we decided it was time to ride something else. So we headed around the park for Carolina Cobra, but along the way we passed Carolina Cyclone & I was shocked to see it had received a complete overhaul during the off-season.
IMG_3598Small.jpg

Not only did the track get a new paint job, but so did the trains.
IMG_3599Small.jpg

Needless to say, I had to make a new POV.

After the quick ride it was on to my favorite booomerang - Carolina Cobra, with it's new trains & comfy restraints.<3
IMG_3602Small.jpg

We headed to the back of the park to ride Afterburn next, passing by a CoasterForce favorite along the way. :)
IMG_3605Small.jpg

We took two rides on Afterburn. The first because it's one of my favorite inverts & the second to take this photo of Timmy.
IMG_3611Small.jpg

Next we headed to the revamped Nickelodeon's kiddie area that has been turned into Planet Snoopy. From this part of the park you can get some great footage of Timmy.
IMG_3626Small.jpg

With a perfect view of the first drop!
IMG_3629Small.jpg

We wanted to ride Nighthawk next, but the ride was down so we headed back to Timmy for one last ride.
IMG_3640Small.jpg

Isn't this exactly the same car as the one at Kings Dominion? I guess they're both just replicas.
IMG_3638Small.jpg

We started to head out of the park when they suddenly re-opened Nighthawk just as we passed the ride entrance. It had been down for about 2 hours, so there was no one ahead of us & we got right on to the front row.
I took this photo of Carolina Cobra from the lift hill.
IMG_3641Small.jpg

Nighthawk is my favorite flying dutchman due to the great surroundings.
IMG_3642Small.jpg

Here comes the loop.
IMG_3644Small.jpg

This photo is actually upside down, but it looks better this way.
IMG_3645Small.jpg

In case you didn't know, the park is sitting right on the state line.
IMG_3647Small.jpg

I wonder if they how they pay taxes for each state?
IMG_3648Small.jpg

As we left the park to head home I stopped at various places around the parking lot to film & take a few more photos of Timmy.
IMG_3656Small.jpg

Look at everyone hanging on for dear life.
IMG_3657Small.jpg

Doesn't it look great at sunset?
IMG_3658Small.jpg

I like the strange little twist this drop has in it.
IMG_3651Small.jpg

Yummy floater airtime.
IMG_3652Small.jpg

Everybody likes it.
IMG_3649Small.jpg

See?!
IMG_3650Small.jpg

The trims don't have any effect on these hills.
IMG_3654Small.jpg

So that's was it & we headed off on our 9 hours drive home.
The trip was completely worth it & I enjoyed spending my birthday with Aidan doing what we love to do the most.

We don't claim too much, we own everything.

And I'm so jealous you got to do all this. Looks like you had an awesome time, both Intimidators look really good and it's awesome you got to rife them. Nice PTR.

but we only made it six miles before stopping to chow down at our favorite Cracker Barrel. After filling up on some southern fried steak (the kid had chicken fried chicken) & dumplings

As if I weren't jealous enough about you getting to ride those two coasters, I'm now INSANELY jealous :p .

Nice to ehar you enjoyed them both, and you got some nice pictures while you were at it!

When all is said & done, I guess I did. It took some time for I305 to grow on me, but by the end of the day I was really starting to like it & I ended up liking it more than Timmy at Carowinds, which was just as I expected it to be.
I wish the B&M floater had a better helix & it would have ranked higher, but I wasn't disappointed with it by any means. It has plenty of really great floater airtime, is a fairly long ride & the crew is just fab.
I305 on the other hand, is a bit short & could use more ejector air than on just those two hills. The first drop is great as is the "blackout" curve, but there's not much to get out of those quick transitions plus the last trim just kills the ride. I still rate the coaster high for doing what is does & being unique in that way, but it's not a top 10er as I imagined it would be.
Another thing I really like about both coasters is the throughput, which is just phenomenal. Both are also great additions to each park & really make the parks worth visiting all the more.
I'm going back to Kinds Dominion on Saturday for the 10pm-midnight ERT & I'm sure riding I305 at night will be awesome. Any chance of us getting to see you there?

Alas, no. I am aiming to hit #1000 this year, and I'll be on a trip from Knoxville to Baton Rouge this week. I'll say "Hi" to Rampage, Cannon Ball and Cannonball Run for you.
:p
