Not the best Topic title but here goes with my first trip report (as you might of guessed) of me exploring Denbigh Castle.

Part 1- Walls

The trip report starts on the walls as that's when I started taking the photos.

The first five photos are from by the Flag pole Facing different directions.

I don't think I've been to Denbigh castle. I've been to so many I've lost track.

I love old castles though, there's something romantic and maudlin about them. I prefer ruins to intact castles, simply because intact ones (like Warwick) have lost their true history and it tends to be masked by much later modernisation. Though, it's sad going to a castle like Ludlow or Stafford which has fallen into ruin within the last century. There you know that at least some of the original could have been preserved. Still, you don't get a true idea of the castle when it's in ruins. It's like studying a skeleton of an animal and trying to work out what it was like when it was alive. I find it fascinating.

So it's great to see a castle this size in pictures. It's one of those wonderful sprawling affairs I really like. Hurrah for castle spotters ;)

Right then...

Part 2- Structure

This Part is basically the walls from the floor.

D11.jpg

Down the big well that's there...

D12.jpg

Past the well showing how big this place actually is...

D13.jpg

There's no way you'll climb over this in a hurry :p

D14.jpg

Big random boulder with some brickwork on the bottom...

D15.jpg

Bit closer in on that brickwork...

D16.jpg

The brickwork again. I took a lot of photos of it as it must have been from and old tunnel of some kind.

D17.jpg

Bricked alcove in Castle wall where a candle probably went to light up the room I would have been standing in.

D18.jpg

More of the wall...

D19.jpg

Picture down the hole under the path...

D20.jpg

Picture of the southern gateway. This gateway seemed a bit pointless as it led straight to the moat.

Third and final part coming soon.
