I dunno how much this has made the news worldwide, but Queensland has had numerous rivers flood over the past couple of weeks, and now Brisbane has been hit...
Our house is safe, but several thousand have been inundated, including the Brisbane CBD. I work in Milton, which is the next locality west, and was told not to come in...probably a result of the power being cut, major roads flooded, and the rail network running a severely disrupted service.
No power at home until about an hour ago, so with little to do I spent the afternoon wandering around my local area:
http://maps.google.com.au/?ie=UTF8&hq=& ... 7&t=h&z=15
...And seeing all what has happened. The river is currently 4m above normal levels, and will rise another 2m by tomorrow morning.
So anyway, pics.
The M5 at Jindalee
A park near the M5:
The golf course....Secondary college in the background.
A shopping center car park nearby. Everything was closed today in many parts of the city due to the blackouts and staff not being able to get in.
Further along at the suburb of Sinnamon Park.
Next I had a look down towards the river further downstream at Seventeen Mile Rocks in an industrial area:
After that we checked out the river from the street we used to live in.
And our old house had its lowest level flooded:
Pressing on, the Sherwood Arboretum was under:
Footy ovals too:
..And underpasses:
We figured the Mt Coot-tha summit would give a decent overview of the extent of things...The large 'lake' on the right of image is where Oxley common, and the main Brisbane produce markets are.
Heading back you could see trains parked for several kilometers along the express track pair of the Ipswich line. The central maintenance centre and stabling facilites at Mayne are low lying, so the fleet was moved out:
We began to head back..we saw this in Corinda:
The BP servo I normally fill up at..Eeek, that LPG tank is a tad buoyant!
Flooding in Oxley:
It started raining again after that, so we went home.
But for good measure, here are a couple of pics I took yesterday.
The river at Milton just before I decided I should leave work early.
A pontoon that had broken free. On the radio I heard that apparently people at the Regatta Hotel (A well known Pub here) were playing a game where they were counting the number of pontoons that had floated past...37!
