Brisbane Floods

I dunno how much this has made the news worldwide, but Queensland has had numerous rivers flood over the past couple of weeks, and now Brisbane has been hit...
Our house is safe, but several thousand have been inundated, including the Brisbane CBD. I work in Milton, which is the next locality west, and was told not to come in...probably a result of the power being cut, major roads flooded, and the rail network running a severely disrupted service.
No power at home until about an hour ago, so with little to do I spent the afternoon wandering around my local area:
http://maps.google.com.au/?ie=UTF8&hq=& ... 7&t=h&z=15

...And seeing all what has happened. The river is currently 4m above normal levels, and will rise another 2m by tomorrow morning.

So anyway, pics.

The M5 at Jindalee

The golf course....Secondary college in the background.

A shopping center car park nearby. Everything was closed today in many parts of the city due to the blackouts and staff not being able to get in.

Further along at the suburb of Sinnamon Park.

Next I had a look down towards the river further downstream at Seventeen Mile Rocks in an industrial area:

After that we checked out the river from the street we used to live in.

And our old house had its lowest level flooded:

Pressing on, the Sherwood Arboretum was under:

Footy ovals too:

..And underpasses:

We figured the Mt Coot-tha summit would give a decent overview of the extent of things...The large 'lake' on the right of image is where Oxley common, and the main Brisbane produce markets are.

Heading back you could see trains parked for several kilometers along the express track pair of the Ipswich line. The central maintenance centre and stabling facilites at Mayne are low lying, so the fleet was moved out:

We began to head back..we saw this in Corinda:

The BP servo I normally fill up at..Eeek, that LPG tank is a tad buoyant!

It started raining again after that, so we went home.

But for good measure, here are a couple of pics I took yesterday.

The river at Milton just before I decided I should leave work early.

A pontoon that had broken free. On the radio I heard that apparently people at the Regatta Hotel (A well known Pub here) were playing a game where they were counting the number of pontoons that had floated past...37!

It's been fairly major on the news over here, and looking at those photos I can see why. Glad to hear that you should be ok. I like the photos (not the content), they're interesting with the tall things sticking out of the water.

^Yeah, I agree about the photos. There's always something disturbingly fascinating seeing things being ruined. I always find myself looking at the pictures in awe (forest fires, earthquakes, floods etc) without actually realising the drama that's actually happening to the people involved.

Glad everything seems to be OK for you though.

Quite interesting photos there Gazza. Glad to hear that you & your family are not too badly affected.
We've had a good bit of coverage here in the States as well. The videos from the area are pretty awesome. I haven't been able to find the one I saw on the news yesterday of cars in a parking lot being swept away one-by-one from their parking spaces, but here's one that really shows a lot of the damage. Seeing the power of the flood waters in action is astounding & I didn't think about how this is affecting the animals in the area until I saw this.

The vid you speak of was shot in Toowoomba, 100km west:

Indeed. Further north is where much of Australias beef production takes place, so a common image you see is cows gathered on pockets of high ground:

Wallabies and goannas too..

Another big thing to wash away...300m worth of the floating riverwalk at New Farm:

I'm glad you made this topic Gazza. I saw you post the other day about this, then caught the reports on the news that evening.

I was hoping you would be okay. What an absolute nightmare though.

Do they have any idea of when the flooding is likely to subside?

This is really bad!

We've gotten a lot of coverage over here, like ECG said... yesterday I think it was this was on the front page of our local paper's Nation/World section.

Glad to hear you're okay!

Glad to hear you're ok Gazza. Not every day a CFer is able to report a proper huge news story with pics etc, so that's kinda cool.

Those flood levels are just insane though, I agree with everyone else about the beauty of the images before realising the horrible story behind them, but there is something really captivating about them.
