3 (Almost) Engineers, One Day at Kings Island PTR

Jarrett

Most Obnoxious Member 2016
So while sitting in chemistry class not caring about what our professor was talking about because it wasn't anything like the stuff on the homework or exams, one of my college friends and I hatched a plan to do Kings Island one day after classes were out for the summer. Today I met them at my house and drove to the park and back with them...the day after there was an incident that shut a ride down at the park.

LEFT TO RIGHT:
Jarrett- Jarrett is studying mechanical engineering in hopes of getting a job in the amusement industry. Jarrett walked into the park today with 103 credits to his name. Jarrett has almost always spent his life obsessed with roller coasters and amusement parks and has become a sort of internet sensation on various coaster forums, and has what appears to be a cult following in England. :p
Rebecca- Rebecca is a computer science/computer engineering double major that's into gaming. Rebecca entered the park having ridden two coasters in her life, both of which traumatized her.
Andrew- Not to be confused with the Andrew from my Kings Island trip report from September 2012, Andrew is also studying computer science (under the engineering umbrella at our school) and has a thing for video games. Andrew had never been to an amusement park and had never ridden a roller coaster before today.

As a warm-up ride, we started the day on The Bat. Rebecca thought she'd try to redeem herself for two bad experiences at Kings Island on Backlot Stunt Coaster and Adventure Express and rode it...bad idea! She walked off absolutely frazzled and terrified! Screamed from the time they dispatched to the final brakes. She was even screaming on the turn back into the station. I explained to her just how safe roller coasters were but she just started talking about some quantum physics concept I would never understand saying that the universe would disintegrate or something on the ride...never mind that a coaster would be the LEAST of your worries if the fabric of the universe unraveled!

ANDREW, on the other hand, loved it. He and I wanted to go ride Banshee. We left our stuff with Rebecca and got in line. There were about three full switchbacks in the cattlepen but it moved quickly. We ended up in the sixth row of the purple train and before I knew it, we were on! Fifteenth time riding this bad [strike]boy[/strike] girl! Halfway through I couldn't tell if Andrew was screaming in excitement or terror. But then we get to the batwing pullout and I hear his opinion. "THIS IS AWESOME!!!!" I never walk off that thing unamazed and he didn't either. He was screaming and clapping in the station (as opposed to my subtle "enthusiast applause" when we pull back in that I always do) ready for more!

Diamondback/DiamondSTACK/DiamondSTUCK, today, was DiamondPACKED! The cattlepen was about half full and while it was DiamondSTACKING a little, it was nowhere nearly as bad as it was three weeks ago when I was there with rtotheizzo17.

We rode in the back and got off...wet! Those button-ups I wear over my goon shirts? I didn't tuck it into the clamshell well and it blew out and was flying behind me like a Superman cape on the ride...and a corner of it got nailed by the splash! The wind caught Andrew at a bad time and he got some water blown onto his shirt, too. About a fourth of mine was soaked but it dried quickly.

Wanting to hit some solid ground for a bit, we did Kings Island & Miami Valley Railroad. Not the BEST train ride (I have to give that to Dollywood with an honorable mention to BGT) but it's a good way to catch your breath during a busy day.

This view is the only good thing on the train, though. Along with Old Fort Cody.

Rebecca informed me that this name was the original name of Cincinnati and came from three languages (Native American, English, and something else and I want to say French) and that it was renamed for the Civil War soldiers that followed the beliefs of the Roman general Cincinattus. Learn something new every day...

The Beast was next and by far the best daytime ride I've ever gotten on it. We sat on a non-wheel seat towards the middle and it was great. I declare from this day forward that I will never do a wheel seat on The Beast again!

Soak City was next though I didn't do anything. Rebecca watched the bags because she was too scared to do Banshee, I returned the favor by watching their stuff because I forgot my swimming trunks (Sorry, no "Jarrett's ridiculous shorts" like that one thread :( )

We then did Boo Blasters. I expected to get it handed to me since Becca and Andrew are both huge gamers, but I nearly equaled their combined score at 810! All of our blasters were working and it's not like I do this ride every time I go so I have no idea how I did so much better than them.

Having donated money to A Kid Again for Scream for a Kid Again (and I didn't go, go figure, stupid chem test!) seeing the statue of Gabriel Taylor that they just put at the front of Planet Snoopy was cool. It's a lovely statue, but I noticed something else. In his hand he holds a waffle cone...with blue ice cream in it. Could this be a little nod to Kings Island the through their blueberry ice cream the artist added or was it just the choice of color?

Rebecca has this weird thing for birds so we spent five minutes staring at these geese.

I SO should have gotten this as a little homage to my CF family/cult!

We did Dinosaurs Alive after to digest the Skyline Chili we ate for lunch. I hadn't done it in two years and I have to admit, it's a fun thing to do if it's free with your Gold Pass.

We then decided to go get beaten up on Vortex. I'm sorry, but the vile turn into the MCBR is horrible. It's a fun, intense ride but the texture is what takes away from it in my opinion. Bracing correctly at the correct time helps, though.

We went to X-Base to see how Flight of Fear was doing after the LIM overheated...and lookie here! It was open! Andrew loved the theming on it and thought it was themed to Independence Day at first.

#KIFoFOperational! :D

From there it was waiting for the sun to go down to grab a night ride or four. We rode The Racer which Andrew liked and Adventure Express which he also liked but found random.

We managed to get not one, but two dusk rides in on Banshee! Such an intense coaster, and riding it at dusk feels really ominous. Seventeen times!

The Beast was next as the sun sank behind the horizon. Andrew loved it but it wasn't quite dark enough at that point. But The Beast was his favorite coaster of the day, and the twilight did add to the horror movie feel of the ride.

We went on a goose chase to find an open soda fountain that could fill my cup up with something caffeinated so I could be sure to drive us home safely. I threw out the idea of getting in one spin on Banshee since they had turned the textured lighting on. The woman in front of us in line at Ice Scream Zone told us it was below ten minutes, so we ditched line and got in line for Banshee.

What a way to close out the day! Back left seat on the blue train at night! The whole park was lit up and flying through the colored lighting was incredible both on and off the ride. Best ride of the whole day in my opinion and it got me up to 18 rides on it! And I'll be able to get it up to 20 on my 20th birthday on Thursday when I go again with my friends Patricia and Caity! I can't wait! :--D

Banshee goes to sleep...we go home.

Okay, THAT wasn't exactly uneventful. We got stuck behind this stupid guy for 15 minutes that was zigzagging in his lane and going five below the speed limit downhill. Not sure if he was drunk or just a bad driver but it was concerning and he eventually split from us. But I got us there and back safely, I can finally drive to coasters! =D>
